Position Overview

Under the direction of the Senior Health and Safety Manager, the Safety Representative provides technical and compliance expertise to the field employees in terms of good safety habits and provide direction and skills for a safe work environment.  This position works closely with field supervision and personnel to achieve goals and support the safety of each of the company’s business units. 

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Assists with audits of plant facilities regulated under OSHA, General Industry and Construction Standards and MSHA Part 56 Safety and Health Standards for Surface Metal and Nonmetal Mines.
  • Investigate all incidents for root-cause development to ensure unsafe conditions/behavior is not repeated.
  • Participate on safety committee meetings and provide insight and resources on matters relating to committee safety concerns and corrective solutions.
  • Reinforce policies and procedures that support the company’s goals, the operations needs and achievement of safety results.  Support the company’s safety standards, teach Smith System defensive driving course to employees authorized to drive company vehicles.
  • Conduct employee training certifications, classroom training, and practical hands-on training.
  • Conduct job site safety inspections including specified areas for fire-prevention equipment and other safety and first-aid supplies.
  • Assist in conducting weekly toolbox talks and monthly safety training.
  • Assist with plant and roadway incident investigations and document all accidents, safety violations, injuries, and unsafe conditions/activities to find root cause and make recommendations for improvement. Work with Human Resources as necessary to assure employee corrective actions are implemented on a timely basis.
  • Observes workers to determine use of prescribed safety equipment, such as glasses, hard hats, goggles, respirators, clothing, and other PPE.
  • Provide health and safety support to Senior Safety Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Safety Manager.
  • Overnight travel is possible.
  • Weekend on-call is required twice a month.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education/Experience

  • At least 5 years of construction and/or industrial safety experience
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local and company regulations.

 

 

 

Work Requirements

Must have a valid, state issued driver’s license.      

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement essential corrective measures.
  • Solid training/teaching experience
  • High ethical standards
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Must be able to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously to accomplish a goal.
  • Able to use resources effectively and efficiently and arrange information in a useful manner.
  • Be able to be a strong voice in bringing the company’s slogan of SEE, STOP, DO to the forefront.

 

Preferred Knowledge/Skills

  • Familiar with Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) and work zone traffic control
  • 16-Hour Work Zone Traffic Control
  • MSHA Part 56 Safety and Health Standards for Surface Metal and Nonmetal Mines
  • OSHA Authorized Trainer 10 and 30 Hour (General and Construction)
  • First Aid CPR Trainer
  • Smith System Certified Trainer

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person.
  • Able to utilize a computer and I-PAD for word processing, e-mail communication, and preparation of documents and presentations
  • Knowledge in MS Excel, MS Word, Powerpoint and Outlook
  • Intermittent climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling are required
  • Periodic, but extensive walking and standing required.
  • Must also be able to drive a vehicle and walk uneven terrain.
  • May require periodically lifting objects up to 40 lbs.

 

Work Environment

  • May be exposed to extreme hot, cold, and wet weather.
