Position: Quality Control Technician

Reports to: Quality Control Manager

Shift: 12-hour rotating swing shift 7:00 a.m. -7:00 p.m. ET and 7:00 p.m.- 7:00 a.m. ET

What you’ll be contributing:

 

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Observes all applicable safety policies and regulations.
  • Complies with the plant sampling schedule of process samples, as determined by the Quality Control Manager.
  • Collects representative raw mill product and kiln feed samples and conducts appropriate tests to assure proper control and maintenance of raw kiln feed chemistry according to quality targets.
  • Performs formulation and raw mill feeder adjustments as needed to maintain quality targets.
  • Collects representative clinker samples and conducts appropriate tests to ensure and maintain proper clinker chemistry according to quality targets.
  • Collects representative finish mill samples, as well as conducts appropriate tests and finish mill feeder adjustments to ensure and maintain proper cement chemistry according to quality targets.
  • Analyzes coal samples for fineness and moisture.
  • Collects representative bag house dust samples and conducts appropriate tests at intervals decided by the Quality Control Manager.
  • Analyzes bottom stage samples for loss on ignition and oxide analysis and determines percent calcination of the sample.
  • Maintains accurate records in designated log books and locations for all testing performed and adjustments made.
  • Checks grinding aid and masonry additive flow rates at intervals set by the Quality Control Manager.
  • Reports problems observed in the plant and ensure all samplers are working properly.
  • Works routinely with Control Room Operators and shift supervisors.
  • Indirectly reports shifting supervisors on off-shifts.
  • Communicates test results to production personnel and issues process and production change orders.
  • Assists in maintaining lab reagents and supplies.
  • Performs additional non-routine testing for process control and research when necessary.
  • Responsible for housekeeping and clean-up of immediate work areas and sample areas or in other areas in conjunction with assigned duties.
  • Responsible for documentation associated with job duties.
  • As required assists in major plant repair projects.

 

To succeed in this position, you will need:

 

  • High school graduation or equivalent is required.
  • Willingness to learn, training will be provided.
  • Ability to read and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, and similar information.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with ASTM standards and testing procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, and make accurate corrections based on the data analyzed. 
  • Knowledge of basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. 
  • Must successfully complete on-the-job training provided by designated supervision or otherwise qualified individuals.
  • Ability to accurately use all laboratory equipment used in performing various tests such as balances, burets, flasks, jet sieves, x-ray fluorescence, manometer, and other related equipment.
  • Ability to use a personal computer for record-keeping and calculations.  Must be familiar with spreadsheet and word processing software.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk over rough and uneven surfaces and climb stairs.     

 

What to expect in a cement environment:

 

Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Mild exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise require compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 250 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
