Summary: 

 

The Senior Geologist-Petrographer follows standard practice guidelines and procedures to perform physical, chemical, and petrographic tests on aggregates, concrete, clinker, and other materials. This position prepares reports on findings for review before submission to technical services and customers and maintains equipment and facilities.

 

What you’ll be contributing: 

 

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines. 
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor. 
  • Performs laboratory examinations and research projects on aggregate, concrete, clinker, and other inorganic materials through petrographic examination, x-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, and chemical and physical testing.
  • Determine causes of concrete distress, specification compliances of in-situ structures and construction materials
  • Utilize clinker microscopy tool to provide insights into the process and quality control of clinker production, and evaluate the impact of alternative fuel and raw materials on clinker reactivity
  • Combine petrographic, chemical, and physical testing techniques to support new product development, ready-mix and precast concrete quality control, durability enhancement, SCM, and chemical admixtures optimization activities.
  • Assembles calibrates, and maintains various equipment and instruments used at the Technical Center.
  • Writes reports to management personnel, technical service, and customers conveying the results and significance of investigations and research performed.
  • Prepares samples for analysis and calibration.
  • Receives, logs, and labels incoming samples.
  • Maintains a record of all data and tests performed, including general observations or unusual conditions encountered.
  • Utilizes personal computer for writing reports, storing data, and evaluating data.
  • Maintains proficiency in testing procedures through new analytical methods and technology.
  • Participates in cement industry workshops, seminars, and certificate training.
  • Provides onsite support to cement plants on clinker microscopy hands-on clinker reactively improvements.
  • Works with corporate mining and cementitious material teams to explore new mineral sources and support strategic thinking.

 

To succeed in this position, you will need: 

 

  • Ability to read, write, and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc. 

  • Minimum 4 Year / Bachelors Degree In geology, engineering geology, or related scientific field. Must include at a minimum the coursework/experience required by ASTM C856, section 4, ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician (Grade I), ACI Flatwork Finisher Technician

  • Minimum Maintains active membership in the local chapter of the American Concrete Institute (KACI), including ACI certification for Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in Optical microscopy for use in concrete and mineral analysis or a closely related position in a laboratory, or a field position in the concrete, mortar, or related minerals industry.

  • Travel Type:  Domestic and International
  • Travel up to 25%
