Position Overview

To Coordinate and oversee all aspects of asphalt operations. Lead his/her team to ensure the highest levels of health and safety of our employees and environmental compliance for our operations. Strategically focused, team builder, and strong financial accountability. This role has a strong emphasis on safe and professional operations management: budgeting and forecasting, labor & equipment utilization, capital planning, preventative maintenance, and ensuring manufacturing best practices and tools are fully utilized across the market area.  Ensures Cadillac Asphalt is viewed as a valued member of the local communities in which it operates. The Operations Manager will work closely and effectively with safety, environmental, sales, customer service, materials performance, and finance personnel. 

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Health and Safety:  Ensures that all processes and equipment meet or exceed OSHA and Cadillac Asphalt Safety guidelines.  Continuously pursues a culture of Safety at all times and actively engages employees to reinforce safe behaviors.
  • Environment:  Establish the environment as a priority in operations management and acts as a steward to the environment and the community.  Reinforce the need to meet or exceed environmental compliance among personnel.
  • Operational Strategy:  Develop an operational strategy for the market area.  Identify operational deficiencies and areas of opportunity based on systematic processes. Optimize fixed and mobile equipment utilization, and plant personnel, while ensuring customer satisfaction through excellence in quality, production, and delivery. 
  • Operations Planning:  Ensures the proper processes and tools are utilized to plan operational activities:  examples maintenance programs (i.e. preventative maintenance, winter shutdown), capital planning, process reviews, and performance planning/budgeting & forecasting, asset utilization, and inventory management. 
  • Capital Expenditure Request (CER’s):  Work with his/her team to analyze capital needs and prepare appropriate requests for capital consistent with Cadillac Asphalt guidelines.
  • Operations Analysis and Tracking:  Ensure that key operational data are reviewed and analyzed monthly (i.e. cost items, KPI reports). Track progress against action plans and KPI targets.  Investigate variances and ensure corrective actions are established and managed.
  • Plant and Operations image: Maintains and promotes a consistent professional best in class image in all operations.  Plant /operations image includes all housekeeping, storage, equipment condition, property entrance, signage, and buildings.
  • Mentoring and People Development: Works closely with plant management to develop a professional approach to operations management.  Maintains professional and ethical conduct at all times.  Provides monthly operational employee meetings and reviews safety, business performance, company initiatives, best practices, employee recognition and more.  Coordinates with HR to select, hire, train and terminate as required.  Also responsible for performance reviews merit and bonus recommendations as well as having overwhelming concern for the development of the team members.
  • Professional Association:  May participate in industry associations as a Cadillac Asphalt representative, promoting Cadillac’s interests and participation.

  • Communication Skills: Communicates clearly and listens carefully in an open, candid, and consistent manner

 

Qualifications

  • Five to ten years’ experience in HMA plant operations with related knowledge of asphalt and civil construction
  • Three to five years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong Financial and business acumen
  • Strong communication skills and ability to network within the organization
  • Asphalt product and production knowledge
  • Preferred BS in Business, Construction Management, or Engineering
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications, specifically Excel, Word and PowerPoint

  • Work may be performed in an office setting and outside on a job site. Physical requirements include sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, twisting
  • Majority of the work is conducted in an office setting. May also be required to go to another division or off-site meeting.

 

Work Environment

  • This position will work the majority of the time in an office setting but may also on limited occasions work outdoors on a job site and in a plant. Work environment will vary depending on job task.
