Position Overview

This position is responsible for supporting and giving guidance of the overall safety philosophy of Harrison Construction. This position requires an individual who is extremely motivated with a high level of organizational skill, including written and verbal communication, and problem solving.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Interface directly with company leadership to address Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) concerns.
  • Assist in maintaining a high level of safety compliance and awareness at company fixed locations (asphalt and redi-mix plants, offices, shops) and road construction projects through site visits and documenting findings and working with local operations management to set appropriate timelines to address any deficiencies.
  • Interface with field crews on a regular basis to promote company EHS philosophies, expectations, and personal responsibility.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, strategic plans, training materials to strengthen a strong safety culture.
  • Interact and consult with other members of the CRH EHS team to develop new EHS initiatives, objectives, and best practices.
  • Attend training sessions/meetings presented by CRH or national safety organizations as needed.
  • Training
    • Appropriate regulatory required training
    • CRH mandated training as needed
  • Effectively manage any work-related injury, incident, or near miss including:
    • Incident investigation to determine cause and contributing factors
    • Injury prevention strategies
    • Reporting
    • Implementation of corrective actions
    • Interface with Worker’s Compensation TPA, General Liability and Auto adjusters to manage cases.
  • Recordkeeping (OSHA) Maintain documentation for safety and health program (OSHA 300, monthly reporting, BLS annual surveys)
  • Prepare technical documentation for management's use when dealing with regulatory agencies and other internal/external needs (Safety Metrics and )
  • Assist in environmental compliance as needed.
  • Consult with Human Resource personnel on safety concerns including:
    • Orientation of new hires
    • Toolbox meetings
    • Monthly safety updates
    • Safety incentive plans
    • Annual safety meetings
    • Disciplinary issues related to safety
    • Return to Work
  • Strong desire to help people by creating and continuously improving a safe work environment
  • Attitude/cooperation: always maintaining courteous and professional manner with co-workers, customers and public.  Must adhere to Code of Business Conduct.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education/Experience

  • Previous experience road construction, asphalt paving and manufacturing preferred. 
  • BA/BS degree in Occupational Safety or related field or comparable professional experience in industrial safety preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Must be familiar with OSHA/DOT/EPA regulations pertaining to environmental, health, and safety.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Power Point)
  • Strong attention to detail; superior organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with many different types of employees.
  • Maintain working knowledge of new technologies and standards developed by the industry and government regulations.

 

General Requirements 

  • Highly self-motivated with the ability to establish relationships and achieve desired results.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Mobility to attend various meetings and events at offsite locations.
  • Hours are extended throughout the year to include nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Travel may be required. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
