Summary 


Ash Grove Cement is looking for an experienced lab manager at the Technical Center in Overland Park, KS. The lab manager supervises chemists, physical testers and geologist/petrographer, oversees work requests and projects.  The key responsibilities include maintaining lab accreditations (CCRL and AASHTO), equipment calibrations, updating SOPs associated with physical and chemical testing procedures, reviewing technical reports, and interacting with cement plant engineers, regional technical service managers and customers on troubleshooting projects and process improvement initiatives.  The lab manager organizes and delegates tests on raw materials, cement, pozzolans, aggregates, mortar, concrete and concrete related materials, and advises waste materials screening, and environmental analysis. Exposure and proper handling of confidential information which may have a competitive or intellectual property value to the company, or its customers is expected.  This position reports to the Technical Center Director. 

 

Responsibilities 

 

  • Acts as Technical Center safety officer, coordinates safety trainings for new and existing employees, and identifies continuous improvement opportunities
  • Utilizes lab information management system (LIMS) to collect necessary project background info, develop testing plan, and monitor workflow 
  • Takes the ownership and leadership role to complete assigned work requests and project with fast turnaround time and sound technical interpretations
  • Manages the lab work schedules efficiently and adapts to changing priorities when required.  He/she is responsible for personnel training, mentoring, coaching, and assuring test results accuracy 
  • Continuously improves technical skills through adopting new test methods and CRH best practices
  • Supervises lab work for raw materials, cement, pozzolans, mortar, concrete, aggregates, and related materials. Must demonstrate personal proficiency in testing procedures, and lead lab in receiving expert level ratings on all CCRL proficiency samples and CRH round robin program samples  
  • Experience with ICP, UV spectrophotometric, AA, GC, XRF, XRD, microscopy, and wet analytical methods. Acts as company’s representative to interact with instrument vendors for trouble shooting and technical training
  • Monitors lab supplies inventory and equipment conditions and assists CAPEX projects development for needed replacements/upgrades
  • Conducts cement plant waste fuel lab, physical and chemical lab audits on an annual basis 
  • Provides onsite support to cement plants on trials of alternative materials, alternative fuels, new process equipment/techniques. Through clinker microscopy analysis, clinker reactivity optimization, assists production and product performance improvements at Ash Grove Cement plants
  • Acts as a mentor for assigned plant quality managers, development chemists, assists with their training and development goals, and implements QCM success profile and gap analysis tool that have been developed
  • Works with quality leader of CRH Group Technical Services and CRH laboratories to execute quality roadmap, analytical programs, and best practices sharing
  • Maintains concrete field/laboratory test certifications from American Concrete Institute (ACI), and NRMCA Concrete Technologist Level II (or above) certifications
  • Participates in cement industry workshops, seminars and relevant HR trainings 
  • Participates in Technical Center research projects. Works with corporate manufacturing and technical services departments to explore new raw materials, mineral sources, and supports strategic projects from CRH Innovation Center

  • Must spend time travelling to various Ash Grove Cement locations for training/support, and attend industry training events

  • Familiar with testing procedures described in the standard specifications by various agencies, such as ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, and DOT specs
  • Customer focused and demonstrated teamwork attitude
  • Self-motivated, with fast learning potential, and committed to grow with the manufacturing & technical services team

 

Experience 

 

 

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience with cement and concrete materials testing, in a consulting/ research laboratory setting
  • Proven experience in supervision of people

 

Education 

 

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science or civil engineering preferred. Educational background, and work experience in cement & concrete materials research, quality control, cement manufacturing process highly preferred
