Job Summary

 

Responsible for all aspects of operating a limestone and dolomite grinding facility including safety, production, maintenance, quality, environmental compliance, finance, and HR.  Works directly with staff and hourly employees to drive operational excellence.  Incorporates directives provided by corporate management into plant policies and procedures to maintain appropriate standards and schedules.  Uses independent judgment in making routine plant decisions.  Works from general policies and procedures.  Refers to Operations Manager when clarification or interpretation of organizational policy is needed.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Communicates daily with plant staff to plan, coordinate, and review plant operations including areas such as production and shipping schedules, maintenance activities, product quality, current events, and plant specific initiatives.
  • Work with all employees to promote and maintain a strong safety culture.  Assist plant EHS Manager to implement company, and plant specific, safety initiatives.  Participate in area safety inspections.  When warranted, participate in bi-annual site safety inspections with MSHA.
  • Establishes plant standards, short-term goals and long-term strategic plans regarding production, maintenance, process improvements, and capital projects.
  • Prepares and presents reports regarding plant operational performance and activities on a daily, weekly, monthly and/or annual basis.    
  • Developments and presents the annual plant operating budget with input from staff.  Monitor plant operating costs monthly in comparison to budget.  Identify any operational risks or opportunities over the course of the year that could impact plant costs
  • Oversee plant environmental stewardship.  Work with various government agencies, environmental engineers, and attorneys as necessary to insure plant environmental compliance. 
  • Work with staff to develop annual personal performance goals.  Conduct semi-annual performance reviews to monitor progress, addressing opportunities for improvement, growth, and/or development.
  • Work with staff, contractors, vendors and engineering firms to develop, design, budget, and implement plant process improvement and preventative maintenance projects.  Package and present projects requiring capital funds.
  • Work with HR, staff, and employees to implement fair and consistent administration of the plant collective bargaining agreement.  Participate in contract negotiations.  Assist with recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and training of new employees.

 

Education

 

  • Bachelor's degree required. Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry, or physical sciences preferred. Bachelor's degree in business is acceptable. 

 

Experience

 

  • 5 years of experience in a cement, lime or aggregates manufacturing facility with specific exposure to plant management responsibilities

  • Excellent ability to network with industry professionals, consultants, vendors, suppliers, regulatory and the community.
  • Familiar with MSHA/OSHA regulations, safe work practices, hazard recognition, regulation of air, water and waste, and general business and law contracts.
  • Fundamental understanding of basic chemistry and physical testing methods.
  • Familiar with the following types of systems: computerized maintenance management, data acquisition, compliance management, and data management
