Position Overview

The Regional Director, Environmental, Health & Safety is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, oversight, leadership and support of regional and operating division (OpDiv) safety/health, risk management and environmental programs.  In addition, the Regional Director assists with employee and cultural development programs. This position reports to the Regional President and directly collaborates with the OpDiv VP/GMs and their respective safety managers.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • Able to communicate and establish strong working relationships with all levels of management (front line leaders to senior executive management). With the ability to work well on a regional and national level.
  • Manage three direct reports encompassing risk management and environmental, with a dotted line reporting relationship with four operating company safety managers.
  • Executive level administration and maintenance of EHS programs.
  • Ensure proper incident analysis and learning processes are in place and that they are effective toward the achievement of a ZERO Harm learning culture.
  • Ensure effective and efficient processes are in place for the organization and maintenance of both passive and active support files/records for all incidents/injuries, including general liability, auto liability, worker’s compensation, and all other applicable claims.
  • Ensure completion of required OSHA/MSHA/Company recordkeeping and reporting of OSHA 300A Logs, MSHA Quarterly Reports, Company/Corporate Annual Reports, etc.
  • Develop and maintain key metrics for company and its subcontractors using data and leading indicators to proactively develop loss prevention program.
  • Executive level leadership and administration of proper risk management processes, including negotiation/settlement of claims within proscribed limits of liability and directing other claims and lawsuits as appropriate.
  • Act as Liaison with all affiliated agencies, including: Insurance companies, MSHA, FMCSA, USCG, OSHA, and EPA
  • Support and drive the Human Performance Initiative, providing direction and support to the region and OpDiv’s.
  • Oversee EHS audit process; collaborate with OpDiv safety professionals and presidents for selection/installment of safety devices/practices.
  • Coach and guide business leaders in conducting their own training programs.  Collecting & making available EHS material to business leaders for training needs.
  • Steward/Implement Safety Leadership and Human Performance philosophies, education, & growth strategies.
  • Provide direction/technical support to ensure employees health is protected and we are minimizing the potential employee exposures through established industrial hygiene practices. 
  • Oversight of Care Management processes; ensuring injured employees are provided with the best available treatment to ensure injury resolution and prevention.
  • Comply with federal, state and local safety regulations by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; interpreting standards; enforcing adherence to regulations; advising management on needed actions
  • Implement strategic plans to ensure continued success in meeting company business objectives within Safety/Health, Safety Leadership, Human Performance, Risk Management, Environmental sustainability and Leadership education.
  • Monitor company safety results and trends, compile reports and share trends and corrective direction.
  • Develop creative communication methods to ensure the distribution and institutionalization of best practices through tools such as:  Microsoft Office Suite, Quickbase, Riskonnect, Business Intelligence (Tableau) or other more innovative ways.

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Act as an on-call contact for emergency incident management of a 24/7 workplace
  • Valid Driver’s License



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Health and Safety related field and over 5 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to read and comprehend complex written and verbal instructions, correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write complex correspondence.  Ability to carefully articulate and clearly communicate both specific technical information and creatively compose development strategies.  Ability to effectively participate in and speak to large groups.  Advanced presentation skills required.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to comprehend scientific formulas.  
  • Detailed working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Ability to effectively navigate and research regulatory agency and industry related web content.



Effective communication, leadership skills, strategic mindset, ability to drive vision, creative writing, clear and analytical thinking, creative presentation abilities, speaking clearly and effectively in front of large and small groups, and organization abilities.


Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear.  The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to handle or feel.  The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 40 lbs.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.


Work Environment

Office Environment and Field Visits including Plants, Pits, Shops and job sites, hotels and conference rooms. This position will require 40% to 60% travel within the State of Ohio with occasional travel outside of the State
