Finish Motor Grader Operator

Responsible for safely operate equipment while working around ground crews. Knowledge of fine grading operations utilizing GPS/Robotic Machine controls and rough grading is required. Blade operators will be experienced in cutting grade to within +/- 0.04’ and be able to monitor equipment operation and identify malfunctions. Will be responsible for machine cleanliness and minor routine maintenance of equipment.

 

Responsibilities

 

Finish Blade / Motor Grader Operator responsibilities and abilities include but are not limited to the list below. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Directs rollers operators, water trucks and grading crews to achieve proper placement and compaction to grade and place all sub surface courses to an acceptable finish for the following courses to be placed.
  • Operates GPS and Laser Controlled Grading System motor grader.
  • Finish-grading for correct grade (blue-top and GPS).
  • Performs finish grade work to blue tops or other close specification control. This work is subject to strict inspection and must conform closely to specifications.
  • Motor Grader Operator will be responsible to grade excavation and embankment to process and lay base along with other materials.
  • The Motor Grader Operator may blade haul roads and other general work.
  • Removes old surfaces as well as spread and process materials to construct street/road surfaces to precise grade specifications.
  • Rough grading includes highway and site shoulders, slopes and ditches.
  • Performs a variety of semiskilled tasks in the maintenance of highway, street, and bridge projects.
  • Ability to proficiently operate three or more types of heavy equipment such as a backhoe, scrapers, dozer, excavator, loader, rock trucks, compactors, articulated trucks, crushers, and/or motor graders with or without GPS in a manner to prepare the job site to meet the required grades.
  • Operate motor grader on road construction jobsites.
  • Control machine speed, direction, blade alignment to accomplish tasks.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance such as inspection and fluid check.
  • Notify management of any equipment or safety issues.
  • Read and understand civil plan drawings.
  • Coordinate daily project tasks between work crew members
  • Fastens attachments to tractor with clevis or wedge pin hitches.
  • Moves levers and depresses pedals to maneuver equipment and raise, lower, and tilt attachments.
  • Feels lever and listens for stalling action of engine to estimate depth of cut.
  • Drives grader in successive passes over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified grade following markings on grade stakes or hand signals.
  • Responsible for constructing/grade new roadways, base courses, building pads, footing excavation and water ponds and to properly slope and grade to specifications.
  • Responsible to load, move, level and grade dirt, rocks, demoed concrete and other materials in a safe and efficient manner all in a high paced environment to maintain production goals.
  • Ability to maintain the initiative to maintain the flow of work under minimal supervision.
  • Performs maintenance work to motor grader including oiling, greasing, and making necessary adjustments to equipment.
  • Inspects equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil, and water.
  • Responsible for general housekeeping, light maintenance of equipment, proper care of equipment, operating the equipment without damaging it along with maintenance checks of equipment including reporting usage/utilization hours on a daily basis.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures.
  • Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
  • Climbs on and off equipment.
  • Works weekend, holiday, and/or overtime work as the project needs require.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Have a minimum of 3 years of finish blade / motor grader operating experience.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of Trimble GPS system.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years of rough grading with dozer or motor grader.
  • Have a minimum of 7 years of heavy civil construction industry and road construction.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years of Heavy Equipment Operating Experience with multiple types of equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work safely under pressure with time constraints in a changing environment.

Education/Experience

  • 3 years of experience required. GPS experience is a plus
