CRH's Americas Materials division is the leading integrated supplier of aggregates, asphalt, ready mixed concrete and paving and construction services in North America. Our operations span North America with over 29,000 employees at close to 1,660 locations in 45 US States and 2 Canadian provinces.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior SAP Controlling (CO) resource with deep, hands-on experience designing, configuring, and implementing SAP CO solutions. This role owns the SAP Controlling landscape end-to-end — including Cost Center Accounting, Profit Center Accounting, Internal Orders, Product Costing, and Profitability Analysis — while working closely with O2C, P2P, P2D and CA teams to ensure accurate, integrated financial data across the organization. The ideal candidate combines strong hands-on technical/functional expertise, proven experience integrating SAP CO with FI, MM, SD, and external systems, and the communication skills to present solutions clearly to business stakeholders and manage consultants.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Business Process Design & Improvement
- Act as the primary business-facing process owner for SAP CO — spending regular, recurring time with business leads in Finance, Controllership, and cross-functional module teams.
- Partner directly with business stakeholders to understand gaps and pain points, translate business needs into functional requirements, and design scalable, efficient SAP CO processes.
- Define and track KPIs and process performance metrics jointly with business owners, and report progress back to them on a regular cadence.
- Establish and run a standing business process governance forum (e.g., monthly SAP CO process review) to surface emerging issues, prioritize backlog items, and keep process design decisions transparent and business-led.
Driving Design Workshops & Business Engagement
- Own end-to-end workshop planning and delivery: define objectives, identify the right stakeholders, build the agenda, and drive the session to concrete, documented decisions and next steps.
- Plan and facilitate requirements-gathering and process design workshops with cross-functional stakeholders across Finance, Controllership, and cross-functional module teams — driving discussions toward decisions rather than open-ended brainstorming.
- Run fit-gap and solution design sessions with business and technical teams, presenting options, trade-offs, and recommendations, and driving alignment on process decisions and configuration approaches.
- Use visual facilitation techniques (process maps, whiteboarding, journey maps) in live sessions to help business stakeholders see and agree on the proposed design in real time.
- Manage constructive conflict in workshops — surfacing and resolving competing priorities between functions (e.g., Finance, Controllership, and cross-functional module teams) to reach a workable, business-endorsed outcome.
Implementation and Configuration
- Design, configure, and implement SAP CO modules — including Cost Center Accounting, Profit Center Accounting, Internal Orders, Product Costing, Material Management, and Profitability Analysis (CO-PA) — to meet business requirements and financial objectives.
- Translate business and financial reporting requirements into scalable SAP CO configuration and design.
- Lead or support full-cycle SAP CO implementations, upgrades, and enhancement projects, including blueprinting, configuration, testing, and go-live support.
- Perform periodic reviews of CO configuration to identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization.
Systems Integration
- Own hands-on integration between SAP CO and FI, MM, SD, and other SAP module teams to ensure seamless data flow and accurate financial results across the organization.
- Partner with technical teams on integrations between SAP CO and external systems, ensuring data integrity across the finance and operations landscape.
- Support month-end and quarter-end close activities, ensuring cost allocations, settlements, and profitability data are accurate and timely.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot and resolve integration issues affecting cost and profitability reporting.
Team & Stakeholder Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of SAP functional analysts/consultants supporting CO.
- Act as primary liaison between business stakeholders (Finance leadership, Controllership, and technical teams) and technical teams.
- Manage vendor and implementation partner relationships for CO-related projects and integrations.
- Prepare and present status updates, roadmaps, and risk assessments to senior leadership.
Project & Change Management
- Lead SAP CO enhancement projects, upgrades, and rollouts, including requirements gathering, solution design, testing, and deployment.
- Ensure proper documentation of business processes, configuration, and support procedures.
- Drive adherence to change management, testing, and release governance standards.
- Support audits and ensure compliance/internal controls across CO processes.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of SAP Controlling (CO) experience, including full lifecycle implementations.
- Hands-on configuration expertise in Cost Center Accounting, Profit Center Accounting, Internal Orders, Product Costing, and Profitability Analysis (CO-PA).
- Strong hands-on integration experience across SAP MM/SD/PP touchpoints with CO (e.g., material cost flows, standard costing).
- Proven hands-on experience integrating SAP CO with FI and SD modules to ensure accurate, end-to-end financial data flow.
- Experience supporting month-end/quarter-end close processes from a Controlling perspective.
- Demonstrated experience creating end-user training materials and delivering training sessions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience mentoring junior consultants or team members.
Preferred Qualifications
- SAP certification in Controlling (CO) or S/4HANA Finance.
- Experience with SAP S/4HANA Universal Journal and its impact on CO/FI integration.
- Hands-on experience with Material Ledger and Actual Costing.
- Experience with integration/middleware tools (e.g., SAP PI/PO, SAP CPI) supporting CO integrations.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum delivery environment.
- Prior experience in a shared services or global SAP Center of Excellence (COE) model.
Key Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a detail-oriented approach to configuration and testing.
- Ability to translate complex financial requirements into practical SAP solutions.
- Excellent collaboration skills across finance, operations, and technical teams.
- Strong mentoring and coaching orientation.
- Clear, confident communicator across all levels of the organization.
