The crane operator will be responsible for operating a Lattice Boom Crawler Crane to unload barges using a clam shell. NCCCO license is recommended.




-         Assist the boat pilot, supervisor or operations manager with the daily operations and upkeep of the crane and any piece of equipment that is used for the unloading process within the SMI Marine function.


-         Ability to maintain and safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment, including but not limited to; Friction Crane, Frontend Loader, Bulldozer, conveyors and skid steer loader.


-         Other miscellaneous duties include but not limited to; general labor, shoveling, performing necessary equipment / boat/ barge maintenance, assisting foreperson and/or crew members as needed.


-         May perform welding and fabrication duties as required.


-         Ability to detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly.


-         Ability to follow directions. 


-         General understanding of OSHA, Longshoremen, & Jones Act regulations.




-         Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.


-         Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.


-         Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.


-         Report to the assigned job ready to begin work at the designated start time.


-         Strict adherence to The Shelly Company Manual of Safety Practices & Procedures.


-         Strict adherence to The Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the book of company policies.


-         Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 





Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas.  Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position: Coveralls, Fall Protection, Gloves, Welding Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, Welding Aprons, Welding Helmet, Welding Shield, Lifejacket.

          EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

          Must have direct crane / equipment operating experience.



          Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situation to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.



          Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.



          Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
