Position Overview

Tilcon Connecticut is seeking a Brakeperson to support rail operations at the North Branford Quarry. This position is responsible for coordinating and directing the movement and loading of railcars carrying aggregate materials, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely transportation to customers.

The Brakeperson works closely with site crews, management, and external rail partners to align rail operations with production schedules. This role requires strong communication, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Direct and oversee train movements within the quarry to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Perform switching, coupling, and uncoupling of railcars to create proper train configurations.
  • Conduct safety checks on railcars, tracks, and surrounding areas prior to train movement.
  • Ensure all railcar doors are secure and areas are clear before operations begin.
  • Coordinate loading operations with plant personnel to ensure efficient material handling.
  • Assist locomotive engineers during movement with safety and operational support.
  • Maintain clear communication with:
    • Locomotive engineers
    • Production supervisors
    • External rail carriers
  • Accurately document and report:
    • Railcar loadings
    • Movements and delays
    • Maintenance needs
  • Identify and resolve operational issues to minimize production and delivery disruptions.
  • Perform basic inspections and assist with minor maintenance of railcars, tracks, and locomotives.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Follow all company policies and MSHA safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this role successfully, an individual must be able to perform all essential duties satisfactorily.

Required

  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor, industrial environments.
  • High attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Preferred

  • Experience in railroad or rail yard operations, preferably in an industrial or aggregate setting.
  • Knowledge of railroad safety standards, switching procedures, and regulations.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment.

Work Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including cold, wet, and icy environments.
  • Ability to climb and work on railcars and track systems.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules based on operational needs.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety and operational efficiency.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Employees are required to wear PPE in accordance with MSHA and company policies, including but not limited to:

  • Hard hat
  • Safety glasses
  • Reinforced-toe boots
  • Hand protection (gloves)
  • High-visibility safety vest

  • Frequent: Bending, kneeling, squatting, climbing, standing, walking, sitting, reaching, driving, repetitive motion
  • Occasional: Fine motor tasks

Lifting Requirements

  • Frequently: 0–50 lbs
  • Occasional lifting may reach up to 50 lbs

Vision Requirements

  • Close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception
  • Ability to adjust focus and safely operate equipment

Work Environment

  • Work is performed in active quarry and rail yard environments.
  • Frequent exposure to:
    • Moving mechanical equipment
    • Outdoor weather conditions (cold, wet, icy)
    • Noise and vibration
  • Noise levels may range from moderate to high.

Environmental Conditions

  • Continuous: Working with others
  • Frequent: Cold weather, wet conditions, moving equipment, noise exposure
  • Occasional: High heat
