Position Overview

The Mechanic Internship involves assisting experienced mechanics with inspections and repairs on Trucks, On-Highway End Dump Trucks, Tractors and Trailers and Heavy Construction Equipment, learning basic mechanical skills, and following safety protocols under supervision. Where business permits, opportunities for limited work during the school year and subsequent summers including possible transition to full-time employment may apply.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Under the supervision and guidance of an experienced Mechanic / Mentor, assist in troubleshooting and repairing diesel engines and heavy equipment.
  • Assist in performing preventative maintenance.
  • Assist in performing electrical and hydraulic repairs.
  • Replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, electric motors, drums, seals, hydraulic pumps, valves, pistons, rods, gears, crankshafts, cylinder blocks, etc.
  • Perform basic service tasks and related work as assigned.
  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.
  • Comply with all safety measures and handle company tools and equipment properly.
  • Complete all tasks efficiently and maintain a neat and orderly work area.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Must own basic tools.
  • Must be enrolled in high school, vocational, technical, or college degree program.
  • Must be willing and eager to learn about the construction industry.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to write reports and analyze raw data.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Perform manual labor representative of the construction industry and program requirements
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to commute to and from their work location, as well as between facilities and job sites when necessary.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.  
  • May require sitting for extended periods of time. 
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Able to climb ladders and work at heights.          
  • Able to work in all weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to exert up to 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally.


Work Environment

  • Able to work in all weather conditions. 
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. 
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn. 
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud but is typically moderate.
