Position Overview
The deckhand will be responsible for all duties on tow boats as well as general labor duties at Gallipolis Asphalt Facility as well as other locations as required.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Assist the boat pilot, supervisor or operations manager with the daily operations and upkeep of the boat or asphalt facility.
- Ability to maintain and safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment, including but not limited to Frontend Loader and Skid Steer Loader.
- Clean and sweep barges.
- Other miscellaneous duties include but are not limited to; general labor, shoveling, performing necessary equipment maintenance, assisting foreperson and/or crew members as needed.
- Responsible for maintaining a clean work environment which includes all equipment.
- May perform welding and fabrication duties as required.
- Ability to detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Responsible for any documentation that is required to be completed, including maintenance and safety documentation.
- General understanding of OSHA & MSHA regulations.
Other Requirements
- Must have 2 years of deckhand experience.
- Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Report to the assigned job ready to begin work at the designated start time.
- Strict adherence to The Shelly Company Manual of Safety Practices & Procedures.
- Strict adherence to The Shelly Company policies and procedures as outlined in the book of company policies.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position: Coveralls, Fall Protection, Gloves, Welding Gloves, Hard Hat, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, Welding Aprons, Welding Helmet, Welding Shield
Qualifications
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation, using some combination of skills and abilities.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Must have 2 years of deck hand experience.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require protective equipment
