Job Description Summary

We are seeking a qualified, safety minded, highly motivated individual to work as an intern who will gain an overall understanding of the major divisions of P.J. Keating Company so that the intern can eventually be considered for a full time position within P.J. Keating Company or CRH. At P.J. Keating we tailor your internship to your goals and interest. 

 

We are seeking interns in our construction, aggregate, quality control, Equipment, and environmental divisions.  If you aren’t sure which area interest you, we will give you exposure to all four areas this summer.  Below are some experiences you will receive. 

 

  • Safety – Our number one core value
  • Support the safety goals and processes of the company
  • MSHA and OSHA training and regulations
  • Operations – Asphalt, Aggregates, & Equipment
  • Spend time at our aggregates, asphalt, and construction to learn the fundamentals of production
  • Understand how to estimate and plan plant production requirements
  • Learn asphalt mix plant scheduling process to meet customer and internal demands and minimize capacity conflicts
  • Understand compliance requirements for our operations to meet federal and state regulations including MSHA and OSHA etc.
  • Equipment preventative maintenance, scheduling and shop operation
  • Quality Control/Quality Assurance – Asphalt, Aggregates
  • Gain an understanding of the QC/QA process and material testing procedures at P.J. Keating Company for aggregates, asphalt, and construction
  • Learn the material specification requirements our products are required to meet
  • Construction
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of the bidding and execution of construction.  This includes project estimating/bidding, pre-construction meetings, in-house safety meetings, OJT’s, subcontractor compliance, planning and scheduling, trucking, and traffic control requirement
  • spend time in field operations for heavy construction, reclaim, fine grade and paving
  • Understand how crew and scheduling efficiency is instrumental to achieve project goals
  • Learn how we manage contract backlog and the importance of long term planning
  • Understand project profitability (revenue/costs)
  • Commercial – Asphalt, Aggregates,
  • Learn the fundamentals of material pricing for asphalt and aggregates to towns, contractors and MADOT
  • Spend time at a scale location
  • Learn to derive quantities from plans and how to accurately price products
  • Managing customer issues
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Billing
  • Leadership/Development Goals
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders at P.J. Keating Company.
  • Show a commitment to be visible and active in operations with your fellow employees
  • Learn how to identify and resolve safety, personnel, and equipment/operational problems, in a timely and effective manner
  • In additional to learning these aspects, the selected candidate may be required to perform general laboring duties. This position will be based in Massachusetts but travel may be required throughout the State depending on the location of our jobs.


Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program to receive credit
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
