Job Summary

The extrusion department is where it all begins.  Aluminum logs are heated and pressed through a die to obtain various shapes used in architectural products.


The saw helper is responsible for helping the saw operator by collecting samples, inspecting the metal for defects, move scrap to the appropriate rack or container, and move the metal to the rack.  The saw helper’s main goal is to maximize the amount of quality material coming off the saw.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Remove the end scrap from saw in a safe manner.
  • Measure the length of the metal to make sure it is the correct length.
  • Place metal on the correct rack, separating paint and anodize orders utilizing the saw shuttle.
  • Aid the saw operator in the quality inspections, collection of samples, blow saw chips and operate saw shuttle.
  • Change out racks on conveyor line.
  • Assist with general housekeeping in Extrusion Dept.
  • Comply with Company and Health & Safety policies and procedures



  • Regular and predictable attendance, safely perform tasks and adherence to all safety procedures are essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to maintain departmental production and quality standards with little supervision.
  • Teamwork is essential, must be willing to work closely and effectively communicate with co-workers.
  • Must be able to use a tape measure to 1/16’s to accurately verify correct metal lengths.
  • Must be able to make simple mathematical calculations and learn to read die drawings.
  • Must be able to learn Saw Operations to fill in as needed.
  • Must be willing to learn and accept operator positions as openings occur.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to work overtime or “off shift” work hours as required.
  • Must be willing to perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or lead.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand for entire shift, for up to 12 hours.
  • Requires constant reaching, handling and grasping while turning of upper body while moving and lifting.
  • Must be able to frequently lift metal with a weight of 60# and occasionally 150# with partner.
  • Must be able to frequently turn while holding metal weighing up to 60 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds with partner.
  • Must have good hand dexterity and hand eye coordination while working work partner moving metal.
  • Must have the ability to learn and visually inspect for metal surface quality
  • Must be able to occasionally assist co-workers pushing buggies weighing up to 3000#.
  • Requires occasional squatting, kneeling or crouching
  • Must be able to work in a frequently hot work environment.



The manufacturing facility is subject to the same general climate conditions as outdoors (heat, cold, humidity, etc.)  Chemicals, dust, pollen and other typical airborne particulate matter are present within the atmosphere and may create some odors in the plant.  Oldcastle, in an effort to provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, limits exposure to chemicals through written procedures, engineering controls and PPE.  While some chemical may pose health risks if not properly used, employees are trained on the proper safety equipment and procedures for handling chemicals.  While the chemical exposure and odors are under acceptable levels set by OSHA and TOSHA, they nevertheless, can be smelled and are handled according to the company’s hazardous program.
