POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Operational Intern will support heavy civil infrastructure projects and gain hands-on exposure to construction management practices. The internship targets Construction Management majors seeking practical field experience. The intern must be a team player, detail-oriented, and eager to learn in a fast-paced construction environment. Responsibilities will involve assisting with project planning, scheduling, financial management, and quality compliance, while ensuring adherence to Tilcon Connecticut’s safety standards. Occasional night work may be required.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Interns will provide support and gain experience in the following:

  • Assisting in project planning and scheduling of labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor requirements with project stakeholders.
  • Supporting efforts to ensure compliance with OSHA and Tilcon’s OH&S management system.
  • Contributing to project financial management, including:
    • Daily labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costing
    • Units of completion tracking
    • Cost controls and key performance indicators
    • Payment documentation and change management
  • Assisting with procurement activities, including purchase orders and forecasting.
  • Supporting project teams in meeting quality standards, safety compliance, and effective communication.
  • Helping maintain accurate project documentation and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned to provide well-rounded exposure to the operations of a heavy civil construction project.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

To be successful in this internship role, individuals should demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

  • Ability to interpret construction plans and material specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a willingness to contribute to team-based solutions.
  • Excellent organizational and communication abilities.
  • Comfortable working in physical and fast-paced field environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

 

Education/Experience

 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • Prior construction or civil infrastructure experience (internships, co-ops, fieldwork) is preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with DOT projects or union environments is considered an asset.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Standard internship schedule: average 40-50 hours per week, with potential night or weekend requirements based on project needs.
  • Jobsite-based internship; primary reporting from a construction trailer/field setting.
  • Exposure to active construction environments (heavy equipment, traffic, weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain).
  • Travel to and from jobsites within Connecticut may be required.
  • Must always comply with Tilcon Connecticut’s safety requirements.

Other Requirements

  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must pass a “Fit for Work” physical to meet site safety standards.
