Job Summary

 

The Shipping Manager will directly oversee, schedule, and efficiently execute the shipping process.   Plan and manage the day-to-day allocation of resources (trucks, equipment, people, materials and systems) in order to efficiently, safely and cost effectively achieve performance goals and customer requirements. This will include supervising and training employees in the Shipping Department in a manner consistent with overall Company’s policies and procedures..  Improve performance through coaching, training and developing employees.  Implement and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures.  
 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Set shipments in advance in coordination with production and customer service.
  • Schedule trucks for pickup and delivery.
  • Supervise personnel and coordinate loading workflow.
  • Ensure all load schedules are completed, product is loaded accurately and safely, and that loads are secure, and manifests are correct each day.  
  • Accurately report any product not loaded as scheduled.
  • Track absenteeism and review and approve employees’ time worked in timekeeping system.  
  • Ensure that all personnel, prior to the start of shift, are wearing the correct safety equipment and that safety awareness is maintained throughout the shift.  
  • Ensure that all safety and incident reporting procedures are followed as well as all individuals are properly trained and their job functions are being performed correctly.
  • Report to maintenance and/or safety personnel any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions and/or maintenance.
  • Perform performance evaluations for direct reports.  
  • Suggest and/or initiate personnel actions such as promotions, hires, transfers, pay adjustments, and terminations and ensure compliance with the Company’s affirmative action policy, practices and procedures.  
  • Investigate and resolve employee relation issues/conflicts.  
  • Complete verbal and written disciplinary warnings/counseling in accordance with the company’s policy and procedures
  • Be involved in other management tasks as required by the business unit.

 

 

Skills, Knowledge, and Ability Requirements

 

  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience in a Shipping department/environment.
  • Manufacturing industry experience.
  • Able to plan, allocate resources, manage loading and coordinate people and equipment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good MRP and Computer system skills.
  • Problem analysis resolution
  • Able to read and perform basic mathematical calculations as well as read and write measurements in numbers, fractions and decimals at a high school education or equivalent level
  • Able to read a picking list and properly complete a manifest
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

 

Work Environment

 

Work performed in both office & plant environment where temperature is fluctuates.  Exposure to a production environment can occur several times a day for which:

  • Noise levels in the work environment can be moderate to high.
  • The plant facility is subject to the same climate conditions of the region (heat, cold, humidity, etc.).  
  • Chemicals, dust, pollen and other typical airborne particulate matter are present within the atmosphere of the production floor and may create some odors in the plant. The Company, in an effort to provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, limits exposure to chemicals through written procedures, engineering controls and PPE.
  • While some chemicals may pose health risks if not properly used, employees are trained on the proper safety equipment and procedures for handling chemicals.
  • While the chemical exposure and odors are under acceptable levels set by OSHA and the WCB, they nevertheless, can be smelled and are handled according to the company’s hazardous communication program.
