Position Overview

Operates and maintains various types of earth moving, paving and general construction equipment.


Wage Range:  $26 - $32 per hour, based on experience. 

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Reads and sets elevations and grades.
  • Distinguishes between properties, types and moisture content of soils.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and inspections.
  • Operates various types of ditching, trenching, hoisting, earth-moving, and miscellaneous construction equipment (or asphalt and concrete paving machines and equipment).
  • Starts, warms up, checks controls and shuts down machines.
  • Performs pre-and post-operational inspections.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Previous operating experience is preferred.   
  • Valid Drivers License is required.
  • Valid commercial driver license (CDL) with endorsement is preferred but not required.

 

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Report to the office dressed appropriately and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work independently within in a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required (more than75% of the time).

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of the safe and efficient use of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of the working mechanics of diesel and gas engines, hydraulics and electrical functions of construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding processes. Understanding of the hazards of chemicals including materials such as oils, antifreeze, asphalt, cement, solvents, and battery acids.
  • Basic reading, writing and simple math skills. Regular and punctual attendance required.

  • Requires full range of body motion including and operating levers or controls, manual dexterity and eye hand coordination.
  • Requires use of foot-controlled pedals and sitting for extensive periods of time.  Occasionally requires lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Sometimes requires working at heights.
  • Requires correct vision and hearing within normal range.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.

 

Work Environment

  • Frequent exposure to rain, sleet, snow, dust, mud, heat, cold, noise and other conditions common to a construction site.
