Position Overview
Responsible for sampling asphalt product to ensure product meets required specifications. Partners and coordinates daily/weekly scheduling with APAC management, plant personnel and crewmembers, as well as, DOT inspectors to obtain necessary samples and mix designs.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Perform duties as prescribed by the NCDOT QMS manual and/or controlling specifications on federal projects, including but not limited to FAA and FHWA jobs.
- Perform Asphalt Quality Control Test in lab or on Roadway, compile test data and have an understanding of test data in order to make Plant or Roadway adjustments.
- Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
- Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
- Prepare and record accurate information; maintain test results database.
- Obtain required certifications in a timely manner.
- Perform general cleaning of work areas.
- Assist internal and external customers in any quality related matters.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Attitude/cooperation: always maintaining courteous and professional manner with co-workers, customers and public.
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred, with the ability to interpret and apply verbal and/or written instructions in English
- Must obtain and maintain DOT certifications required to test asphalt as required by state regulations.
Work Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Ability to follow specifications set by NCDOT
- Ability to work as a team member and alone
- Must be self-motivated
- Ability to work with chemicals
- Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes. Overtime work required. Out of town/county/or state work may be required
- Ability to adhere to PPE (personal protective equipment) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by company.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Must have valid driver’s license and pass APAC Defensive Driving Course/APAC Driver Qualifications Standard in order to operate Company vehicles.
- Ability to drive to multiple plant and/or job site locations.
- Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Must be able to communicate effectively with customers and all company personnel.
- Ability to develop relationships and to work with teams as both a leader and a participant.
- Mathematical skills required and must be able to calculate percentages and precise measurements.
- Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Must have or acquire basic computer skills and be able to work with e-mail and simple spreadsheets.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Prior experience in asphalt lab, production, and/or lay-down preferred
- Current NCDOT Lab Tech Certification preferred
- Current NCDOT Mix Design Certification preferred
- Current NCDOT Roadway Certification preferred
- Density gauge experience preferred
Physical Requirements

- Physical ability to work in hot, dusty locations
- Must be able to adapt and work in extreme weather temperatures
- The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands and fingers.
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hand and arms above their shoulders.
- The following motions will be required: stretching, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, kneeling, throwing, walking, hammering, standing, reaching, rubbing surfaces, squatting may occupy most of work day
- Must be able to exert up to 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects, 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, all while using proper lifting techniques.
Work Environment
- Will be exposed to extremes of heat or cold weather.
- While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
- The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud but is typically moderate.
