Position Overview

 

The Ready-Mix Plant Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and quality-focused operation of a ready-mix concrete batch plant. This position oversees the batching and production of concrete products, maintains inventory levels, coordinates with dispatch and drivers, and ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards. The Ready-Mix Plant Operator works closely with customers, drivers, mechanics, and management to support efficient plant operations and customer satisfaction.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

 

  • Operate and monitor ready-mix batching equipment to produce concrete in accordance with customer specifications and company quality standards.
  • Verify mix designs, ticket information, and material quantities before batching.
  • Coordinate daily production activities with dispatch, drivers, quality control personnel, and customers.
  • Monitor plant operations and adjust production processes as needed to ensure efficiency and product quality.
  • Conduct routine inspections of plant equipment and facilities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, lubrication, housekeeping, and minor repairs as required.
  • Maintain inventory levels of cement, aggregates, admixtures, and other materials, and notify management of supply needs.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and operational issues and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel.
  • Complete production reports, batch records, inventory logs, and other required documentation accurately and timely.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Assist with quality control testing and documentation as required.
  • Respond professionally to customer inquiries and resolve operational concerns in a timely manner.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training in industrial operations, construction materials, or a related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in ready-mix concrete operations, batch plant operations, construction materials, manufacturing, or a related industry preferred.
  • Experience operating computerized batching systems preferred.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting experience is beneficial.


 

Work Requirements

  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations in order to keep time and material records.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgment. 
  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must have the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of ready-mix concrete production processes and materials preferred.
  • Ability to operate computerized batching and dispatch systems.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including data entry and recordkeeping.

The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
