Position Overview

Supervises and coordinates activities of one or more crews of skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled workers engaged in grading and site development construction projects. The worker may operate several types of heavy construction equipment, including finish grader, grade roller, back hoe, dozer, front-end loader, skid loader, power broom and assist with labor related activities as needed.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

• Touring the job site with the Superintendent to review scope, schedule and hazards. Become familiar with the project and contracted scope of work.

• Supervising and coordinating daily crew activities and reviewing production schedules.

• Measure square footage and material thickness to verify compliance with contracts (material yields.)

• Production performance: recommend methods to improve safety, production targets, equipment performance, product quality, and crew performance.  

• Estimating work requirements to meet or enhance the estimated production targets. Detect insufficient utilization of workers and equipment and correct.

Being the site safety champion: ensure the safety of all crew members and the public who may interact with job. Following and enforcing company policies and procedures with all crew personnel.

• Training and mentoring new employees: participating in the 30-60-90 training program, and following up with all new employees to ensure their successful completion in the 30-60-90 program.

• Conduct annual employee performance evaluations for crew members.
• Trucking Performance: refer to the work order for number and type of trucks, spacing of trucks and load times required to haul material from the pit.
• Having time and materials records submitted in B2W Track daily by 8:00am for payroll processing.

• Complete daily truck orders in Line Up no later than 12:00 pm.

• Staying in contact with the pit or dispatch regarding when trucks load at start of shift, trucking or material production delays, inclement weather, material quality, and end of day last call (final truck and amount of material)
• Ability to work day and night shifts as necessary.

Ensure all necessary tools and equipment are on hand and available (laser, gps equipment, drinking water, PPE, shovels, rakes, Yak-Trax traction cleats, plate compactors, hearing protection, safety glasses or prescription safety glasses, face shields, metatarsal guards Etc…)

Confirm equipment maintenance (Oil Change, Tire Rotation, Vehicle Cleanliness)

• Ensure the crew completes daily operations with a positive, friendly attitude. Maintain high Customer Centricity and customer service.

• Work with CDL drivers to ensure they are utilizing company best practices. (GOAL to confirm we are unhooked from hydrant, CDL specific TRACK card, VCR, Key Lanyards, Avoiding confined spaces, Staying off the top of water trucks)

• Read and understand plans, charts, maps and other construction related drawings.

• Document days operations. Maintain written record of daily notes, attendance records and safety related documentation.

• Remove all GPS equipment daily and store in a safe and secure location while not in use (Not in the cab of a vehicle)

• If equipment transport is necessary, confirm all unnecessary items have been removed and equipment is clean and ready for transport, including loose dirt, garbage and debris.

• Clearly communicate with the survey department on needs.

 

 

 

Safety Expectations


• Conduct daily toolbox talks prior to production start (Safety and Risk Assessment, Daily production Goals, Crew Member Responsibilities)
• Make certain crew members have participated in documented task trainings prior to equipment use.

• Have understanding of procedures in the event of an incident.

Demonstrate a clear understanding of safety policy and procedure (TRACK, GOAL, SEE STOP DO, FEET NOT INCHES, BE A SPOTTER GET A SPOTTER, 3 POINTS OF CONTACT, ETC…)

• Ensure VCRs (Vehicle Condition Reports) are completed by all operators daily.

• Locate, identify, mark, and communicate project specific hazards.

• Locate and identify all below above and below grade hazards. Use potholing best practices to confirm all below grade hazard depth.

• Participate in and ensure crew member participation in TYFOOM

 

 

Minimum Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily

 

Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • One to two years previous asphalt paving operations and/or construction related experience highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in a similar position is strongly preferred.
  • Must be a current member or join Local Union within 30 days of hire.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Safety minded professional who demonstrates good performance, attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates the willingness to work overtime and weekends/holidays.
  • Demonstrates the willingness to learn and work a variety of job tasks.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication and customer service skills.

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
