Position Overview

 

The Shop Manager will be responsible for the daily operations of the shop and management of the mechanics.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Oversee daily shop and yard operations, including walk‑throughs, inspections, and completion of standard checklists to ensure safety, organization, and compliance.
  • Champion a strong, employee‑driven safety culture and ensure compliance with all MSHA, DOT, federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead daily crew meetings, including T‑5 discussions, performance updates, and stretching initiatives.
  • Manage maintenance operations through CMMS, including reviewing and converting work requests to work orders, assigning work, tracking progress, and completing final approvals and closures.
  • Supervise shop foremen and technicians, reviewing productivity, time entries, repair quality, and adherence to best‑in‑class repair processes.
  • Schedule, review, and coordinate preventive maintenance (PMs), annual equipment inspections, DOT repairs, and proactive repair plans to maximize fleet uptime.
  • Communicate equipment status, repair progress, and downtime updates to Production and Operations leadership.
  • Oversee outsourced repairs, evaluating cost, shop capacity, technician skill set, and timeline to ensure optimal value and quality.
  • Review and approve purchase orders, shop expenses and sourcing programs to maintain cost control and accountability.
  • Promote and sustain Gold Standard and 5S processes within the shop to drive efficiency, cleanliness, and consistency.
  • Ensure monthly and annual facility and equipment inspections are completed, documented, and used to support continuous improvement.
  • Manage road calls, door calls, and emergency repair needs to support operations.
  • Identify, schedule, and support training and development opportunities for technicians.
  • Develop and enforce tire and fleet maintenance programs aligned with national and divisional guidelines.
  • Collaborate with operations and leadership on fleet forecasting, right‑sizing, and equipment availability.
  • Ensure adequate leadership coverage and continuity when away from the shop.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility, and the ability to adapt to changing business needs.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

 

Education/Experience

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Two-year certificate from college or technical school. Certificate or degree in heavy equipment maintenance and repair preferred.  
  • Three to five years of heavy equipment maintenance experience and/or training and supervisory skills required.

 

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must possess valid DOT medical card if applicable.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as per company policy.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
  • Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Safety Vest.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Able to identify, define, and resolve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions independently.
  • Able to interpret an extensive variety of instructions in mathematical, written or oral form. 
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to equipment operations.
  • Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations in order to keep time and material records.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively with a focus on timeliness and responsiveness.
  • Capable of utilizing the internet effectively for research, evaluation, and repair completion.

 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Able to walk and stand; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The ability use hands in order to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • May require sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to climb ladders.
  • Able to frequently lift 0-25 lbs.; and occasionally lift and/or move 94 lbs. unassisted and occasionally exert forces of pushing/pulling of 100 lbs.

 

Work Environment

  • Able to work in all weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.
