Position Overview

 

Construction Laborers play a key role in supporting highway, utility, grading, and plant operations by safely performing a wide range of construction-related tasks. This hands-on position requires completing various manual labor duties while adhering to all safety standards and project requirements. Work is typically carried out independently under the guidance of a supervisor, with direct supervision provided only for more complex assignments.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform general construction labor duties in support of roadway, utility, grading, paving, and site development projects.
  • Assist with site preparation, excavation, trenching, grading, and backfilling activities.
  • Load, unload, and transport construction materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Operate hand tools and small power tools safely and effectively.
  • Set up and remove traffic control devices, barricades, and work zone signage as directed.
  • Clean and maintain work areas, equipment, and tools.
  • Support concrete, asphalt, pipe installation, and other construction operations as required.
  • Assist equipment operators and skilled crew members during construction activities.
  • Follow supervisor instructions and work independently on routine assignments.
  • Perform routine inspections of tools and equipment and report any safety concerns or equipment issues.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and contribute to a culture of safety and teamwork.
  • Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Previous heavy civil, highway, utility, paving, grading, or construction experience.

Work Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds or more with assistance when necessary.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to and from assigned job sites.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and occasional nights as project needs dictate.
  • Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license. 
  • Familiarity with construction tools, equipment, and job site safety practices.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction certification or other relevant safety training.

Physical Requirements

 

GRIP - with at least 75 lbs. of force                   

CLIMBING - in, around, and on equipment                   

HEAVY LIFTING - of extremely awkward parts and equipment up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist

CARRYING - awkward parts and equipment up to 50 lbs. for 50 feet or more                

HIGH LIFT - of up to 50 lbs. floor to shoulder   

FLEXIBILITY- awkward reaches                     

BALANCE – including standing and walking on extremely slick and uneven surfaces while carrying.

VISION- 20/40 corrected vision to see moving safety hazards, moving equipment, vehicles, and obstructions

HEARING – corrected to hear verbal safety warnings and instructions from coworkers

The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment.
