Job Summary

 

The Drafting Manager coordinates outsourced drafting resources to ensure the efficient, timely flow of accurate engineering drawings and documents, ultimately reducing drawing lead times, improving customer experience, and minimizing overhead costs.

 

The Drafting Manager works with minimal supervision, ensuring effective use of drafting resources and communication between Engineers, Sales, and Operations personnel.  The Drafting Manager determines the workflow, distribution of assignments, and training programs to be implemented.  This role ensures drawings are created timely and meet or exceed customer expectations.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Train, coach, and develop Drafters to ensure the right people with the right skills are present within the Engineering team.
  • Assess effectiveness of external drafting resources.
  • Develop documented processes for all major drafting functions.
  • Create and execute drafting standards, including periodic standards reviews.
  • Drive continuous improvement by using data and metric assessment to optimize individual and team performance.
  • Distribute drafting work from several locations and ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Keep Engineering schedule up to date and accurate, including required documentation and due dates.
  • Coordinate feedback review from Engineers, Sales, and Operations and incorporate any changes into drafting expectations.
  • Seek out best practices from other Engineering teams for implementation; offer best practices developed to others.
  • Weekly reporting to Director of Engineering regarding drafting performance, gap analysis, and go forward plan.
  • Weekly check-in with all drafting resources, to identify key resource needs and ways to support and optimize performance.
  • Monthly meetings with all drafters to open lines of communication, share best practices, celebrate wins, and foster a cohesive, team environment.  Report to Director of Engineering highlighting key victories and challenges from previous fiscal period.

Position Requirements

 

  • Associate's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Working knowledge of how to read and interpret civil plans and specifications
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, BIM platforms, and Microsoft office
  • Good Mathematical skills to calculate dimensions, weights, and volumes
  • Experience managing a drafting group

 

Preferred Requirements

 

  • 5+ years of recent drafting experience
  • Construction experience
  • Knowledge of how precast is formed and manufactured
