*This position will work out of the Baytown office.  The coverage area for this position will include the entire gulf coast (including Houston and Navasota).  

 

Position Overview

The Safety Manager oversees and provides technical and compliance expertise to the field reps and employees in terms of good safety habits and provide direction and skills for a safe work environment within the hot mix, asphalt/paving, heavy construction and aggregates lines of business.  This position works closely with all levels of management and personnel to achieve goals and support the safety of each of the company’s business units. 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Assists with audits of fixed sites and road construction crews regulated under OSHA General Industry and Construction Standards.
  • Assist with fixed site  and roadway incident investigations and document all accidents, safety violations, injuries, and unsafe conditions/activities to determine root causes and develop strategies for prevention.
  • Lead event learning teams with frontline workers for serious or potentially serious incidents in order to develop strategies for prevention.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and provide insight and resources on matters relating to committee concerns and corrective solutions.
  • Stay up to date with changes in safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Coordinate with external agencies, such as OSHA, MSHA, TXDOT, FMCSA or EPA, as necessary.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and recommend appropriate control measures.
  • Design and develop effective safety training programs for employees at all levels.
  • Evaluate training needs based on job requirements and industry standards.
  • Create engaging training materials, including presentations, handouts, and online modules.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal FMCSA regulations.
  • Monitor and evaluate safety performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety and sustainability.
  • Oversee and direct the work of safety representatives.
  • Overnight travel 25%.

 

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education/Experience

  • At least 5 years of managerial experience.
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local and company regulations.

 

Work Requirements

Must have a valid, state issued driver’s license.      

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement essential corrective measures.
  • Influential leader
  • High ethical standards
  • Understands and is familiar with OSHA 1910 and 1925 standards and FMCSA
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Must be able to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously to accomplish a goal.
  • Able to use resources effectively and efficiently and arrange information in a useful manner.
  • Be able to be a strong voice in bringing the company’s slogan of SEE, STOP, DO to the forefront.

 

Preferred Knowledge/Skills

  • Experience in the construction industry
  • CSP, ASP, CHST, OHST, CSHO General Industry and Construction
  • Work Zone Traffic Control and Train the Trainer Flagger certification
  • OSHA Authorized Trainer 10 and 30 Hour (General and Construction)
  • Smith System Certified Trainer

  • Able to communicate with others by email, telephone and in person.
  • Able to utilize a computer for word processing, e-mail communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Knowledge in MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Intermittent climbing, bending, squatting, kneeling are required.
  • Periodic, but extensive walking and standing required.
  • Must also be able to drive a vehicle and walk uneven terrain.
  • May require periodically lifting objects up to 40 lbs.

 

Work Environment

  • May be exposed to extreme hot, cold, and wet weather.
