Position Overview

This is a highly skilled position for the full operation, understanding, and maintenance knowledge of a full-size Motor Grader. Equipment is used to mainly grade excavation and embankment but is also used to grade out multiple types of limestone base and other base aggregate types, asphalt, and other materials. May blade haul roads and do other general motor grader work but key duties are to perform finish grade work close specification tolerances. May oil, grease or otherwise service and make necessary adjustments to equipment as needed.

      

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Work safely in a team environment with other co-workers and managers.
  • Cut grade to specifications in construction and maintenance of earthwork, such as highways, streets, airports, dikes, temporary roads, and site developments.
  • Operates equipment in successive passes over working area, observing reference stakes or hand signals of assisting workers.
  • Operate heavy equipment, safely and efficiently, of various sizes and weights used in road, site or highway construction and paving.
  • Safe, efficient and proper operation of grader to gouge out, level and distribute earth and/or rocks from land preparation to constructing roads and/or job site grading.
  • Level surface to specified grade, being able to cut blue tops, maintain grade and percent slope of roadway.
  • Rough grading includes highway and site shoulders, slopes, and ditches.
  • Follow all company policies and OSHA / MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Follow directions of Foreman as to daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or job site.
  • Perform minor servicing and maintenance of equipment; refer major problems to the Foreman.
  • Perform daily pre–and–post inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with company policies.
  • Assist in training less–experienced employees on the proper operations, servicing, and repair of equipment to further their abilities.
  • Run small power tools such as jack hammer. 
  • Dig, spread and level construction materials.
  • Lift, carry and hold materials, tools, and supplies. 
  • Assist in the placement, moving and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices. 
  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required. 
  • Other duties as may be assigned. 

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience

  • Minimum high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Previous related experience in the construction field and/or training.
  • 7-10 years industry experience. 

 

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must maintain current driver’s license, commercial driver’s license not required but preferred
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to operate equipment to exact line and grade in varying ground conditions and depths.
  •  Knowledge of grade setting, ability to do basic math and understand plans and blue prints.
  • Smooth grade cut, follow slopes and grade the area proficiently.
  • The operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the supervisor.

  • Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
  • May require sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to climb ladders and to work at heights.
  • Able to move/carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions.

 

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud but is typically moderate.
