Position Overview
The Director of Transportation will directly oversee the Pike delivery business unit as it relates to our paving, construction, truck rental, aggregate transfers, FOB and Aggregate sales. This position will focus on Delivery efficiency, DOT compliance and a wide variety of tasks that relate to our transportation operations. Equally important is the ability to “Think big Picture” for company resources and customer relationships. The Director of Transportation will also be responsible for providing a safe workplace for employees, developing employees for future roles, and customer/community relations. The Director of Transportation will take the lead in ensuring all lines of business are working together to meet the overarching company goal of maximizing material sales and overall profitability. The Director of Transportation will lead by example by demonstrating the core competences required for the position.
Location: The applicant may be based out of New Hampshire, Maine or Vermont. There is an expectation to travel 50% plus across NH, ME and VT.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Must have the ability to oversee the Pike truck fleet, as well as hired trucks throughout designated Pike areas in order to establish the following:
- Maximum utilization of our internal trucking assets with a focus on Delivery efficiency and Safety
- Use of Telematics and Transportation Management system to identify and resolve trucking inefficiencies on our Pike construction projects.
- Oversee compliance regarding licensure, medical cards, hours-of-service, insurance, and all related requirements of Commercial Vehicles and Drivers.
- Promote employee engagement in Safety through near miss reporting, safety observations, toolbox talks, think forms and stretching.
- Ability to calculate estimated haul costs, work with the Construction and Sales teams for bidding purposes, and facilitate success on large projects and internal transfers.
- Monitor haul costs on projects and aggregate hauls.
- Monitor P&L reports monthly and assist in the budget process.
- Customer service, recruitment and retention, staffing, compliance, driver safety and productivity training, and management of internal and external assets.
- Develop and execute strategic plan for the Transportation department.
- Manage profit and loss accountability, managing the balance sheet and budget/forecasting process for the Transportation department.
- Constant communication with Dispatchers, Equipment Managers, Project Managers, Plant & Crusher Managers, Paving Forepersons, Sales, Schedulers, and Hired Haulers to identify all trucking needs.
- Develop relationships with key vendors to grow trucking fleet.
- Assist with implementing initiatives to improve driver behaviors and safety (Motive) and reduce idle time.
- Must be an excellent communicator, whether verbally in person, over the phone, or with written correspondence.
- Strive to keep trucking operations at optimum production, low cost, and maintain a safe working environment.
- Assist in supervising Dispatchers and Pike Truck Drivers throughout the region.
- Assist in the employee performance appraisal process and document any and all employee issues as necessary.
- Stay abreast of current DOT regulations, including hours of service, truck weights, maintenance, auditing of DOT files, etc.
- Identify and resolve regulatory, safety, personnel, and truck operational problems in a timely and effective manner.
- Complete accurate and thorough investigations of any accidents involving Pike trucks in a timely and effective manner.
- Tactfully investigate any problems or inefficiencies as they arise whether it involves hired trucks, Pike Truck Drivers, or safety violations.
- Adhere to any and all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), or any other regulatory agency.
Additional Responsibilities

- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.

- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Assist with interviewing and hiring process as necessary.
- Planning, assigning, and directing work.
- Willingness to develop subordinates’ technical and leadership skills and make recommendations for new job opportunities when appropriate.
- Effective management of employee performance through coaching, feedback (written and verbal), rewards, and discipline when necessary.
- Appraising performance, including annual evaluations and new employee 60-day evaluations.
- Addressing complaints and resolving problems in a timely manner.

- Ability to get work done through others using effective delegation, scheduling, and time management practices.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (B.E. or B.S.) from a four-year college; or five to ten years of construction experience with a practical knowledge of DOT, MSHA, OSHA and FMCSRA regulations.
- Excellent computer skills including email, Internet, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Proven ability to develop relationships and effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
- Must display a courteous and professional attitude when dealing with co-workers and the public.
- Extended hours with possible night and/or weekend work as well as overnights.
- The willingness to travel to other Pike locations when needed and work extended hours with possible night and/or weekend work as well as overnights.
- Previous supervisory experience.

- Must possess a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation to and from the job site or office. (CDL preferred).
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Ability to complete necessary mathematical equations.
- Must demonstrate the ability to use a computer to communicate and analyze data. This includes but is not limited to the use of Outlook, MS Office programs, construction software and web-based programs.
- Be familiar with all roles, equipment, and tasks associated with your project(s) and have the ability and willingness to fill in on any role or task as necessary.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but when in the field it could be very loud and may require protective equipment.
