Position Overview


The Estimator position is responsible for using a combination of past experiences, best work practices, and customer needs to accurately project the amount of materials, equipment, and man hours that must be utilized to complete a given project. Based upon these calculations they create a project budget that is then submitted to operations for execution, communicate with the customer to ensure they are satisfied with the work, bill the customer for the work, and ensure payment is received successfully.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Identify bid opportunities and/or potential customers, visit sites, attend/hold pre-bid meetings
  • Analyze sites for quantity takeoffs, analyze Geotech/Survey data, prepare risk analysis
  • Prepare & submit questions to customer so all parties understand the scope
  • Calculate labor, equipment, material, and trucking needs for each individual project
  • Break the work into phases (if necessary) and the differential production rates / multiple mobilizations required
  • Solicit subcontractors and vendors / handle questions or scope issues
  • Prepare proposals for submission to customers with pricing and scope information for signature
  • Request bonds, permits, certificates of insurance, etc. to meet customer needs
  • Prepare subcontractor and vendor agreements
  • If successful, prepare post bid documents for owners, handoff notes for operations and conduct hand off meeting 
  • Must possess thorough knowledge of best practices and how the work is paid
  • Perform detailed cost breakdowns  
  • Execute contracts/agreements with customers
  • Prepare jobs for setup with accounting support team
  • Execute and manage all change orders
  • Once work is successfully completed as per the contract, bill the customer and ensure payment




To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.




  • 4-year degree in construction management, civil engineering, or business is desired but not necessary, OR equivalent experience in commercial or heavy civil construction
  • Experience both in the field and in estimating are desired
  • Valid state driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required
  • Knowledge of HCSS, all Microsoft Office Products, some accounting software is a plus

  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) to build relationships with customers, instill trust with said customers, and acquire repeat business
  • Understanding of procurement's impact on financial results

  • Safely operator a motor vehicle frequently, such as a pick-up truck, often in rough, uneven conditions.  Including mounting and dismounting equipment
  • Inspect construction progress by walking throughout the worksite, which often involves walking on slopes and very uneven terrain or rocks
  • Climbing steps to office trailers or box trailers
  • Utilizing office equipment while sitting
  • Alternating frequently between sitting, standing, walking and climbing
  • Occasional lifting
  • Maintaining mental alertness always to ensure safety of all employees for whom the individual is responsible
