Position Overview

 

This position will lead the development and execution of manufacturing process improvement projects, including lean manufacturing implementation and capital improvement projects at Oldcastle Infrastructure’s West Region precast and enclosures manufacturing locations, located in the states of CA, AZ, OR, WA, ID, UT and Canada.  These projects will improve productivity, quality, manufactured cost and delivery.  The Director of Operational Excellence should be self-motivated and able to work effectively in a decentralized and matrixed team environment.   This position will work closely with plant management teams to implement, track and manage change initiatives.  The Director of Operational Excellence will be directly supported by a team of four Manufacturing Engineers.

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

Manufacturing Process Improvements

 

  • Develop, evaluate and improve production methods utilizing lean tools, knowledge of product design, materials and parts, tooling and production equipment capabilities, process methods, and quality control standards to reduced manufactured cost. 
  • Help identify opportunities for significant improvement by working with operations, engineering, and supply chain teams to identify improvement initiatives and/or capital investment to reduce manufactured costs while driving profitability and competitive advantage.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach a team of Manufacturing Engineers to drive manufacturing process change through active hands-on communication and coordination with plant-level teams
  • Oversee and lead plant improvement workshops to identify, diagnose and address bottlenecks and inefficiencies in production processes
  • Provide follow-up and tracking to insure identified improvement opportunities are completed as planned and teams are accountable to the process
  • Translate operational needs into project requirements and specifications
  • Force rank improvement opportunities to prioritize and track progress – develop and implement project analysis techniques and processes to select opportunities that optimize the following desired attributes: Profit impact, Time to complete, Complexity, Risk, Cost to Implement
  • Provide oversight and guidance, planning, training and mentoring to plant-level teams implementing lean production tools and frameworks
  • Serve as change agent working collaboratively within and across departments, functions and locations to help implement a culture of continuous improvement
  • Identify, document and share best practices within broader Infrastructure team

 

Capital Projects

 

  • Lead identification, development and planning of capital improvement projects within West Region business operations.
  • Provide key support and leadership for capital projects to include:  market analysis, customer analysis, evaluation and selection of equipment and machinery (and opportunities for standardization within Oldcastle Infrastructure), plant design and layout, financial analysis and formal written business proposals
  • As appropriate, solicit proposals from vendors/contractors to address capital project requirements and specifications
  • Together with operations teams evaluate proposals received
  • Oversee detailed design, drafting and engineering
  • Work with Supply Chain function to prepare purchase order contracts for major vendors, engineers, and contractors.
  • Assist procurement in monitoring compliance with specified terms and conditions of the contracts

 

Thought Partner 

 

  • Assist West Region President and other key staff on major investments and initiatives.
  • Support evaluation, planning, opportunity identification and implementation of best practices and standards for West Region business acquisition targets; assist with integrations as needed
  • Analysis of manufacturing footprint and evaluation of expansions or consolidations
  • Support annual budgeting process to include prioritizing, quantifying and planning process improvement opportunities, capital projects and consolidation and acquisition opportunities

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business or related degree or the equivalent in relevant experience (MBA Preferred)
  • 15+ years of operations management experience applying lean manufacturing methodologies to support continuous production operations
  • Drives for results with a bias to action and pragmatic approach to identifying/executing cost reduction initiatives and driving continuous improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence and manage multiple improvement projects at multiple sites simultaneously
  • Effective team builder and leader with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team within a highly matrixed environment, as well as the ability to recruit and develop great talent
  • Competency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and experience with ERP/MRP systems and project management tools
