Position: Mechanical Maintenance

Reports to: Maintenance Superintendent

Shift: Monday-Friday 8am-4pm includes on call rotational shifts

Pay: $36.88/ hour with incremental annual increases

 Summary:

 

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures; repairs and installs all types of plant machinery, equipment, buildings; performs various repairs on compressors, pumps, water and gas lines, pipes and related machinery; performs welding to repair broken machinery and other welding-related duties; performs carpentry work as needed; works from drawings and blueprints to layout and assemble all types of steel construction and repairs; sets-up and operates machine tools for parts used in the plant and performs precision work as needed; operates heavy equipment to perform various duties in the mechanical repair department. Serves as mentor to other employees in the mechanical maintenance classification.

 

 What you’ll be contributing:

 

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Moves and installs all process equipment as well as dismantles, repairs, and reassembles defective process equipment. Performs the following for the maintenance jobs:
    1. Removes and installs bearings and seals with consideration for cleanliness and lubrication.
    2. Aligns sprockets, gears, and couplings.
    3. Removes and overhauls gear reducers, belt and chain drives, and variable speed drives.
    4. Operates mobile equipment and special rigging devices.

 

  • Interprets and works from prints, blueprints, charts, tables, work orders, verbal instructions, and established practices to organize and complete assigned repair jobs. Solves routine job problems effectively.
  • Performs tack-welding using electric processes.
  • Takes measurements and creates simple sketches. Performs project layout as needed.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs some waste fuel equipment.
  • Performs daily inspection of air compressors and water pumps (lube and filters).
  • Repairs and maintains air, water, and gas distribution systems (compressors, pumps, piping, etc.).
  • Performs general pipe fitting and plumbing as needed for plant machinery and systems.
  • Inspects and repairs dust collection systems, when needed.
  • Collects water and oil samples.
  • Maintains filters on air compressors, HVAC, and related systems.
  • Welds broken machinery and installs hard facing on wearing surfaces.
  • Operates cutting torch, travel torch and plasma cutter in performing welding duties.
  • Operates a cutting torch and welder.
  • Obtains qualification to weld with stick electrode, mig or tig machine.
  • Lays out and welds sheet steel for structural work around the plant.
  • Operates and repairs machines and equipment to shear, punch, drill, roll and bend metal.
  • Sets up and adjusts machine settings.
  • Performs precision work on plant equipment outside of the shop.
  • Performs general inspection and as necessary repair of equipment prior to use.
  • Performs lifting and rigging operations with mobile cranes.
  • Assists in vibration analysis and balancing as needed.
  • Performs environmental monitoring testing.
  • Responsible for housekeeping and clean-up of immediate work areas or in other areas in conjunction with assigned duties.
  • Responsible for documentation associated with job duties.
  • As required, assists in major plant repair projects.
  • As required, attends RCRA training for waste-derived fuel activity and performs tasks related to job duties associated with waste-derived fuel activities as required.
  • Observes all safety rules, wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and keeps work areas and equipment clean and orderly.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor 

 

To succeed in this position, you will need:

 

  • Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
  • High school graduation or equivalent is required
  • Willingness to learn, training will be provided
  • Ability to understand and interpret instructions, blueprints, drawings, and sketches.
  •  Knowledge and ability to set-up and operate alignment equipment.
  • Ability to operate a manlift safely and effectively and forklift. Ability to use hand tools, air, and electric driven power tools safely and effectively, hoists, hand taps, dies, cutting torch, welding machines, wrenches, jacks, general and specialized machine tools, rigging equipment, brooms, picks, shovels, saws, ladders, and related equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand instructions and troubleshooting guidelines. Must have mechanical skills and the ability to understand and work on compressors and pumps.
  • Work requires pulling and lifting while repairing equipment such as compressors, pumps, and plumbing.
  • Ability to accurately interpret welding symbols and instructions. Ability to adjust the amperage on welding machine for different rods, and to adjust pressure gauges on welding gases for different metals. Ability to operate cutting torch safely and effectively, travel torch, plasma cutter, air hose, gas bottles, welding machine, welding helmet, cutting goggles, leather sleeves and related equipment. Work requires walking over rough and uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, and pushing and pulling welding machines and gas carts.
  • Ability to perform all necessary mathematical functions and conversions. Ability to operate a shear safely and effectively, punch press, stationary drill, torch, welder band saw, hammer, ruler, square, compass, protractor, overhead crane, forklift, and related equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret charts, tables, and work orders. Knowledge and ability to read and understand micrometers, dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, depth gauges and related measuring devices, and other measuring tools.  Knowledge of basic math calculations. Ability to conduct basic computer skills, including closing work orders.
  • Ability to operate the threading machine safely and effectively, band saw, grinders, and sprayers. Work requires standing for long periods of time (several hours) in front of machines. Ability to safely use hydraulic press overhead cranes, forklifts, cable slings, nylon slings, various rigging combinations, general hand tools, and related equipment.
  • Work requires sitting for long periods of time on heavy equipment, repetitive motion, bouncing when equipment goes over rough terrain.
  • Must possess a current or valid driver’s license, required to drive the pick-up truck off plant grounds.
  • Work requires pushing tool carts and carrying toolboxes, walking over rough surfaces, climbing ladders, lifting, and handling tools and equipment weighing up to 150 pounds, working at elevated heights, and regularly working in awkward positions, in confined spaces and frequently bending and crouching.
  • Must be able to understand and successfully pass all appropriate RCRA hazardous materials training and tests. Must successfully complete on-the-job training provided by designated supervision or otherwise qualified individuals.
  • Work requires walking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders and stairs, working in elevated areas, and working in confined spaces, cement silos, tanks and drain manholes.
  • Will be required to wear and communicate on a portable radio
  • Ability to maintain focus during idle times of equipment operation.
  • Must pass a basic mechanical knowledge test. 

 

What to expect in a cement environment:

 

Will be required to wear a communications radio.Work to be performed in a shop environment as well as outdoor exposure throughout the plant. Mild exposure to cement dust, heat, cold, and noise requires compliance with specified safety guidelines and procedures. Exposure to high elevations of up to 427 feet in height. Exposure to all weather conditions. Normal operation of mobile equipment may result in jarring and vibratory exposure.
