There is a broad diversity of work activities that are required to make a civil construction company successful.  This internship opportunity will expose you to the diverse opportunities that exist in the heavy civil construction arena that are not obvious when observing the physical construction of projects.  All aggregate, asphalt and concrete materials incorporated into a typical civil construction project, must meet specified requirements.  The Quality Control Technician helps provide information to ensure materials do meet specifications to ensure quality materials are provided to each project.

 

Position Overview

 

This is an internship/trainee position working to gain further experience in the construction material quality control program.  This position involves supporting and working with an experienced Quality Control professional with a combination of experience in a lab setting as well as time in the field pulling material samples and or working with construction crews as they construct heavy civil projects and pave highways and airports.  The applicant will gain experience by entering aggregate and asphalt test results into local databases.

 

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

 

  • Participate in local training program
  • Learn quality control methods and reporting procedures
  • Work as a QC Technician trainee
  • Learn how to perform various material testing
  • Enter test results into internal database
  • Learn how to provide density information to asphalt paving crews
  • Learn the value that quality control testing provides
  • Become exposed to the various roles and opportunities provided by the civil construction industry

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Current enrollment in accredited Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field degree program.

 

Work Requirements

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
  • Flexible hours working around class times.  At least 40 hours per week during summer months.
