The Driver Supervisor leads and supports our internal driver team. They foster a culture of safety and engagement. Continuously create value through streamlining operational activities, and maximizing efficiency, utilization, and equipment uptime. Continuously create value through improving processes operational activities and coaching and mentoring a team of drivers, forepersons, and lead drivers. Identifies gaps in transportation and delivery process and brings forth sustainable solutions. Collaborates with other operations departments, safety, dispatch, sales, HR and maintenance departments to maximize organizational value and ensure fleet up time meets customer demand.


Position Overview


The Driver Supervisor leads and supports our internal driver team. They foster a culture of safety and engagement. They continuously create value through streamlining operational activities, maximizing efficiency, utilization and equipment uptime. This role is a coach and mentor of a team of drivers, lead drivers and forepersons. They identify gaps in the transportation and delivery process and bring forth sustainable solutions. The Driver Supervisor collaborates with other operational, safety, dispatch, sales, HR and maintenance departments to maximize organizational value and achieve customer excellence. 


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Adherence to policies pertaining to PPE and always sets the example by wearing the appropriate safety equipment.
  • Responsible for the inspection program adherence and improvement.
  • Champion the SMITH driving keys program to build and maintain a safe driving culture.
  • Mentor all team members for whom they are responsible how to conduct themselves in a safe and prudent manner under all circumstances which they may find themselves exposed to.
  • Operating safety of all internal drivers and fleet.
  • Fluent in all federal and state regulations, including OSHA, MSHA, and DOT.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the company’s safety program and policies related to both delivery and plant equipment.
  • Thoroughly understands and can communicate company policies related to safety, equipment, security, and facilities.  The Driver Supervisor is also familiar with liability insurance rules and policies.
  • Works closely with operational teams related to training and educational activities. Records are kept confidential and are promptly forwarded to appropriate parties.
  • Delivering quality education to new and existing Delivery Professionals in accordance with company policy.
  • Attends or leads monthly/ weekly/ daily safety meetings, providing reinforcement support at all times.
  • Participates in the formal investigative process for accidents. The Driver Supervisor assists in assessing incidents and making improvements to company training curricula to prevent future recurrences.
  • Implementation and advancement of safety initiatives including Verizon connect, safety bucks’ program, risk assessments, leadership observations, near misses
  • Understands all aspects of proper delivery.
  • Communicate roadway or jobsite issues that may impact the interests of the company to both other Delivery Professionals and to Company
  • Understands established driver time standards and company efficiency objectives. He strives to exemplify and teach efficiency while prioritizing safety and quality.
  • Endeavors to anticipate and fulfill all customer needs that do not infringe upon principles of safety or integrity.  The attitude should be cheerful and pleasant, with a sense of urgency.
  • Remains informed of vehicle and equipment changes, safety performance and incidents throughout the company.
  • Instructs in a positive, professional, and consistent manner with continuous reinforcement and coaching. Providing individual mentoring, as well as group instruction, always projecting a positive company image and providing constructive input.
  • Collaborates with HR department in recruiting efforts for hiring driver personnel as well implementing on boarding and training program
  • Coaching and mentoring drivers. Corrective action where applicable. Delivers driver recognition.
  • Communicate with team on all aspects of business including, Safety, quality, production, recognition, performance, business activity and organizational announcements. Daily communication regarding in field operations and constraints.
  • Identifying and reporting operational gaps to immediate supervisor
  • Continuously create value through improving processes, operational activities, and collaborative decision making.
  • Foster positive, high performing culture amongst the driver team.
  • Collaborate with dispatch, sales, operations teams to identify areas of opportunity and support their groups success.
  • Visit internal and external customers to ensure customer satisfaction across all facets of delivery and support a customer centric approach within the group.
  • Maximizing equipment utilization through identifying operational gaps
  • Promote efficiency amongst driver team as well as managing and approving driver timecards.
  • Collaborates with equipment group on fleet maintenance program including scheduling, fleet constraints as a result of maintenance issues and proactive maintenance program.
  • KPI management of internal driver fleet including idle time, NPT time, fuel consumption.
  • Regular and timely attendance


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



  • High school diploma
  • 3-5 years working in a logistics field environment in a supervisory level


Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Strong ethical standards
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks effectively with a focus on timeliness and responsiveness
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
  • Understating streamlining approach in a transportation environment
  • Ability to coach, mentor and lead a driver team
  • Understanding of aggregate commodities such as ready-mix commodities a plus

General Requirements 


  • Mobility to attend various meetings and events at offsite locations
  • Hours are extended throughout the year to include nights and weekends when necessary
  • Regional traveling position
