Traffic Control Supervisor duties and expectations:

A Traffic Control Supervisors main objective is to ensure our projects are equipped with the proper TC Personnel to ensure traffic control is setup safely for our road crews and the traveling public. Additionally, the Traffic Control Supervisor will assist with information and documentation flow between our projects and production departments.  They are responsible for keeping everyone on task and projects on deadline, handling the logistics and keeping all parties updated on the progress. Their end goal? To make sure the project goes smoothly and both the customer who requested the project and the professionals who did the work are satisfied with the end result.


In most cases, the following responsibilities can be expected:

  • Create detailed schedules and set deadlines for various stages of a project
  • Distribute assignments to creative teams and other departments, depending on their availability and priorities
  • Meet with customers to learn more about new project details and give progress updates on existing projects, communicating any issues
  • Monitor projects and workloads, adjusting assignments and deadlines accordingly
  • Maintain job files from various job sites
  • Attend weekly scheduling meetings with management to plan upcoming needs
  • Maintain records of traffic control documentation
  • Work with internal and external customers to ensure they have the resources needed for their jobs
  • As a hiring manager, you are responsible to anticipate work force needs and hire accordingly.
  • Ensure that proper traffic control materials and adequate inventory levels are maintained on each job site
  • Must accurately record, maintain, review employee time cards
  • Expected to assist with daily time card approval
  • Receives, reviews, screens, and maintains job applications for future, qualified employees
  • Must ensure small fleet maintenance is performed regularly by traffic control personnel
  • Keep TC Personnel as close to home as possible to limit travel time
  • Help manage TC Foreman, Maintainer and Flagger costs on each project by communicating with Project Managers and Superintendents through weekly TC Cost Report updates
  • Must be able and willing to work overtime when necessary
  • Must have flexible schedule and work day and/or night hours
  • Other duties as assigned


Professional experience and skills:

To succeed as a Traffic Control Supervisor, you need the ability to multitask, organize and collaborate. Traffic Control Supervisors manage a wide variety of requests from customers with competing deadlines and limited resources. Strong decision-making and prioritization are essential to make sure everything runs smoothly, and Traffic Control Supervisors need to be as organized as possible to schedule, monitor and adjust deadlines and resources as needed.

This position also requires 3 years of hands on/related experience, significant collaboration, and Traffic Control Supervisors should have excellent people management skills. They need to know how to effectively communicate requests and assignments from customers to their team, which includes creating traffic control plans and other related content to meet deadlines and following up when they do not.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; and one year supervisory and scheduling related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.



Language Skills                                             

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills                                                   

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Reasoning Ability                                                      

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


Computer Skills                                             

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Order processing systems such as Quickbase; Spreadsheet software, Word Processing software and Lineup Scheduling Software.  The ability to learn/use Rapid Plan for creating Traffic Control Plans and to use OneDrive for managing and storing TC Documentation

Traffic Control Maintainer Certification

Valid Drivers License


Other Skills and Abilities

·         Ability to speak a foreign language a plus.

·         Ability to operate heavy equipment also a plus.


Other Qualifications

·         Must be able and willing to travel to site locations frequently.

·         Supervise and schedule 30 or more Traffic Control Maintainers & Flaggers collectively.
