Des Moines Asphalt and Paving, a CRH company, has been leading the asphalt industry in Central Iowa for over forty-five years. We have completed a wide variety of projects including highway and street paving, commercial paving projects, parking lot construction, custom asphalt milling, and chip sealing.

 

Position Overview

The Asphalt Plant Supervisor leads his/her team to ensure the highest levels of health and safety of our employees and environmental compliance for operations. Coordinate and oversee plant production while optimizing plant equipment, personnel, and Inventories.  This role requires industry knowledge of the asphalt manufacturing process as well as preventative maintenance and plant repairs.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Provide proactive leadership to ensure the safety culture of the company continues to grow. Collaborates with the local Safety and Environmental Departments to maintain a safe working environment that complies with company standards, as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Establish the environment as a priority in operations management and acts as a steward to the environment and the community.  Reinforce the need to meet or exceed environmental compliance among personnel.
  • Responsible for daily asphalt operations including safe production, quality, customer focus and maintaining the integrity of the safety and environmental systems within company’s operations for asphalt production.
  • Drive operational performance and improvements to meet or exceed company and regional goals.
  • Actively participate in Region, Division, or National Performance teams as required.
  • Manage all aspects of multiple asphalt plant sites including safety, environmental, maintenance, and customer service.
  • Manages R&M spend/track within limits to ensure optimum plant performance and reduce downtime.
  • Participate in annual budgeting and capital expenditure planning for HMA plants with OpCo leadership.
  • Work closely with QC to provide consistent quality product.
  • Ensures the proper processes and tools are utilized to plan operational activities:  examples maintenance programs (i.e. preventative maintenance, winter shutdown), capital planning, process reviews, asset utilization, and inventory management. 
  • Maintains and promotes a consistent professional best in class image in all operations.  Plant /operations image includes all housekeeping, storage, equipment condition, property entrance, signage, and buildings.
  • Assist in cost control related to asphalt plants to include production, maintenance, inventory, and raw material usage.
  • Works with Plant Superintendents to ensure personnel schedules are based on weekly production demands.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • 3+ years of HMA Plant Management preferred.
  • Experience in building materials/construction industry preferred.

 

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license.
  • Must be proficient in use of a computer and ability to learn usage of industry programs.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Understanding of asphalt manufacturing, maintenance, and plant management.
  • Communication skills and ability to network within the organization.
  • Asphalt product and production knowledge.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control practices.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and monitoring systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment. 
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

 

Work Environment

This position will work most of the time in an office setting but may also on limited occasions work outdoors on a job site and in a plant. Work environment will vary depending on job task.
