Position Overview
As Paving Foreperson, you will oversee and direct a paving crew on state, municipal and private sector asphalt paving projects throughout Connecticut. As one of the largest regional paving contractors, we do extensive work with the DOT, FAA, local towns, and private contractors. Ensuring safety, quality, and timeliness will all be important responsibilities of this position.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Ability to lead and direct paving crew as needed to be accomplished on each project.
- Daily communication with Paving Superintendent for project needs.
- Understand and operate grade and slope automation on paver and be able to set and maintain grades.
- Ensure quality of installation and compaction standards are met per specifications.
- Submit a daily electronic time sheet with detailed notes on progress and quality, work zone checklist and safety reports.
- Ensure projects/job sites are operating in a safe manner for Tilcon and the traveling public.
- Work with state, municipal and private representatives on their respective projects.
- Work with quality control and project management personnel.
- Ability to read and interpret project plans and survey information.
- Ensure regulations and company requirements are met for work zones/job sites.
- Support on the job training for crew and employee growth.
- Participate in special projects or responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Working knowledge and understanding of job specifications and operating procedures.
- Understand production needs and maintain contact with the asphalt plant and trucking dept.
- (i.e. progress of the job, projected tonnage per day, breakdowns, periodically monitor yield and overruns to assure compliance, etc.)
- Communicate with paving crew members their specific daily responsibilities, expectations, conduct, proper attire, and safety.
- Daily communications with the Paving Coordinator /Project Owner and other supervisory personnel regarding project status.
- Proper communications with asphalt plant relative to start up and stop times.
- Enforce company safety rules and conduct safety meetings Review weekly safety updates and complete work zone checklists.
- Establish and oversee traffic control needs, including proper signage, proper staffing, ensuring flaggers are afforded the opportunity for breaks (rest periods), communications, etc.
- Be aware of conditions that may affect continuing operations (i.e., weather, safety, etc.).
- Ensure proper trucking and equipment requirements are met.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license for the geographical territory.
- Accurate and timely preparation of company required paperwork, including daily productivity reports, timecards, work zone checklists.
- Maintain proper job records such as schedules, personal diary, etc.
- Ability to make independent decisions daily.
- Drives company pick up / VRP vehicle to and from various job sites.
- Assists crew members with job site duties.
- Train the assigned crew; plan, assign and direct work; conduct performance appraisals (when required); reward and discipline the crew members; address complaints and resolve problems.
- Ensure projects/job sites are operating in a safe manner.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to perform all job duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to perform work in daytime and nighttime conditions.
Education/Experience
Asphalt paving experience required.
Other construction industry experience may be considered.
OSHA 10
Competent Person Training
Traffic control supervisor certification
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Possess strong, basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
- Must be able to work variable hours including daytime, nighttime & some weekend hours, and overtime.
- Travel will be required inside the company’s operational area.
- Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Possess a strong drive, fulfill commitments, and have enthusiasm for the job.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
