Position Summary:
The Assistant Superintendent works closely with the Superintendent to oversee all Asphalt plant operations ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective production. This role ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards while driving operational excellence, productivity, and continuous improvement. The position requires strong leadership skills to manage unionized staff, maintain positive labor relations, coordinate with various stakeholders, including meeting customer needs of both internal and external customers while achieving production targets aligned with company objectives.
Job Duties:
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation and company procedures, including safety programs, training, near‑miss/incident tracking, and corrective actions
- Implement daily scheduling to meet production, environmental, and safety goals
- Prepare annual budgets, monthly forecasts, and CAPEX plans; enforce budgetary controls for labour, repairs, and off‑season overhauls
- Manage KPIs (RAP %, Waste %, productivity) and execute targeted improvement plans
- Manage physical inventories of plant materials (aggregates, asphalt cement, fibres, fillers, etc.)
- Ensure preventive maintenance to minimize downtime; plan annual maintenance with the Superintendent and meet cost targets
- Oversee erection, dismantling, and relocation of plants as required
- Supervise environmental monitoring and reporting to meet regulatory and company standards
- Collaborate with the Quality Control Manager to meet technical standards and ensure mix designs align with job requirements.
- Lead direct reports (Foremen and unionized staff), manage performance and labour relations, and partner with the commercial team to maintain strong customer service and relationships.
Requirements:
- University degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Mining), Engineering Technology, or Business preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a production environment; asphalt plant operation experience is considered an asset
- Proven ability to manage unionized workforce and collaborate with salaried supervisors
- Demonstrated leadership abilities with a track record of building cohesive teams and driving performance
- Strong technical knowledge of plant operations, maintenance planning, and KPI management
- Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills; ability to foster positive labor relations
- Proficiency in MS Office and scheduling tools; experience with Viewpoint strongly preferred
- Valid Ontario G-Class driver’s license with a clear driver’s abstract; willingness to travel across Southwestern Ontario
