Position Overview
The Exploration Technician will work as part of a field team conducting construction aggregates exploration activities by subsurface sampling and geophysical assessment.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
Rotary Sonic, Wireline Coring and Electromagnetic Resistivity Survey operations support to include the following:
- Drill mobilization activities including preparing drill and tooling for transport, hauling drilling support equipment with pickup truck and trailer, tramming equipment with remote controls, and setting up drilling sites
- Drill tooling handling, drilling fluid management, sample retrieval
- Drill operation including sonic and wireline coring
- Sample interval tracking, core boxing, sample chain of custody, and transportation of samples to storage location
- Drill equipment general maintenance including cleaning, inspections, lubrication, and adjustment
- Light fabrication and mechanical repair of drill equipment
- Installation of Electromagnetic Resistivity Imaging (ERI) electrodes and cabling, management of ER equipment
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education/Experience
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required
- 1-5 years of equipment operation and maintenance, sonic and wireline coring experience preferred
- Strong mechanical or equipment repair background
Work Requirements
- Must be proficient in Microsoft suite of tools including Excel, Word and Outlook. Must be able to utilize internet effectively.
- Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check
- Must be able to obtain DOT medical card, CDL preferred
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook
- Work with common mechanics hand and power tools
- Willingness to work in a team environment rotating through exploration activities and assisting the team with other duties as required
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as topographic or geological maps, aerial photography, 3D mine plans, electrical and hydraulic schematics, parts diagrams, safety rules and procedure manuals as well as carry out written or verbal instructions.
- Demonstrate basic mathematical skills as well as the ability to interpret and compute basic formulas.
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and mechanical trouble-shooting skills.
- Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to frequent changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs and other conditions that may affect their daily responsibilities.
- Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
- Demonstrate a strong dedication to meeting the needs and expectations of our internal customers.
- Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Able to communicate with others by telephone, electronically and in person.
- Able to utilize a computer for email communication and preparation of documents and spreadsheets.
- Requires standing for extended periods of time.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50lbs.
- The employee must frequently hammer on drill tooling or pound stakes using a 2 lb sledge
- The employee must be able to climb ladders and occasionally work in cramped conditions
Work Environment
- The noise level in the work environment is high, and requires use of hearing protection
- Work occurs outside in all weather conditions including exposure to precipitation, wind, sub-freezing and elevated summer temperatures without shelter for extended periods
- Work conditions are frequently dusty, wet and muddy
- Travel up to 100% within the Mountain West Region
- Work schedule may include nights and weekends as required to meet deadlines
