Ash Grove Cement is looking for a chemist at the Technical Center in Overland Park, KS. The Ash Grove Technical Center supports our business in quality management, troubleshooting, product development, sustainability, and innovation projects. The chemist works under general supervision, uses standard guidelines, methods, and procedures to perform analyses on cement, concrete and concrete materials, clinker, kiln process, and raw materials, etc. The chemist provides analytical support and staff training, at cement plants and Technical Center. The position has exposure to confidential information which may have a competitive or patentable value to the company or its customers.  The person will report to the Technical Center lab manager.

What you’ll be contributing:



  • Prepares samples for analysis, calibration and testing.

  • Performs laboratory examinations of cement, concrete, clinker, concrete materials, and other inorganic materials using XRF/XRD, thermal analysis, ICP, microscopy etc. Conduct research projects as assigned.

  • Assembles calibrates, and maintains equipment and instruments, as needed.
  • Participates in the cement/waste fuel CO-OP programs as well as the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) National CO-OP Program, and CRH round Robin Testing programs.
  • Conducts thorough QC/QA review of lab raw data prior to report drafts being formatted and maintains proficiency with the lab data management system.
  • Coordinates plant trials related to new product development, and process improvements under the direction of appropriate plant staff.
  • Takes on temporary supervisor responsibilities to facilitate plant lab/tech center daily operations, training schedules, vacation leave coverage, etc. as required.
  • Coordinate cross-training program throughout the lab to meet the necessary testing expertise overlap for lab work continuity/efficiency.
  • Participates in lab safety program. Conducts safety training in areas of expertise as needed/requested.
  • Maintains proficiency in established testing procedures. Conducts comparative evaluations of equipment and analysts. 
  • Develops analytical methods, SOP, and statistics as needed and time permits.
  • Coordinates/supports purchasing of consumable supplies and materials used in lab operations.
  • Travel for training/support to various Ash Grove Cement locations and communicate with internal/external customers.


To succeed in this position, you will need:


  • The candidate should hold a B.S. or higher degree in chemistry or related scientific background.
  • Working knowledge of cement manufacturing and concrete production, admixture technologies

  • Demonstrated experience in lab analysis, preferably in the technical field of cement/concrete materials 

  • Demonstrated analytical thinking and independent problem-solving skills

  • Ability to multitask. Handles non-routine, challenging work at a short notice, and delivers satisfying results dependably

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Capable of simultaneously managing multiple technical projects with a direct technical contribution.

  • Understanding of reporting requirements, tools, and processes

  • A self-starter who can effectively work within a fast-moving and innovation-driven team culture committed to growing within and outside the manufacturing & technical services team
