Job Summary


Oversees the production and distribution operations of manufacturing plants to maximize efficiencies, control costs and produce consistent, quality products. The VP will assume responsibility for the manufacturing facilities including the safety of employees, production, engineering, quality control, maintenance, compliance with regulatory requirements, plant modifications, new construction or reconstruction of manufacturing equipment and facilities, and assists sales in the safety requirements, regulatory compliance, and maintenance of the distribution terminals. Responsibilities also oversee the Talent Management activities of the assigned region which consists of preparing internal candidates for promotion through evaluation and development of skills and abilities while fostering industry contacts to help identify and recruit qualified candidates for open positions in their respective plants. The VP will be expected to issue recommendations for potential strategic acquisitions, sizable capital expenditures, and staffing and manning of the plants which include interaction with and supervision of consultants, engineering firms, contractors, and other external specialists. Refers to Regional VP - Central when clarification or interpretation of organization policy is needed.


Essential Functions


  • Establishes, communicates and assigns job responsibilities, goals and performance standards for direct reports and ensures job responsibilities, goals and performance standards for plant employees have been established and communicated.
  • Ensures Collective Bargaining Agreements are administered in accordance to contract language. Grievances are handled promptly according to contract and settled fairly and expeditiously within the bounds of the agreement.
  • Evaluates the feasibility of and advises the Senior Vice President Manufacturing on the technical and financial aspects of proposed acquisitions, plant upgrades and new product development.
  • Collaborates with the Sales Department executives regarding production and shipping schedules, product specifications, customer issues, public relations, and research and development programs.
  • Ensures a review of plant operations are made on an ongoing basis to include reviews of daily, monthly and annual reports of operations and their associated costs, periodic visits to plant sites (and terminals as requested) to inspect and maintain contact with their operations and employees.

  • Evaluates and approves purchases of operating, repair and replacement supplies as per the corporate purchasing policy.
  • Promotes and champions efficiency and cost control programs and processes in the plants including MEP (Maintenance Excellence Process), Safety Excellence, Quality Control, APAMs (Ash Grove Process Audit Management system), AGem (Ash Grove Energy Management system) and Environmental initiatives.
  • Oversees and ensures compliance and training for Hazardous Waste Fuel plants.
  • Engages the corporate and plant procurement employee and legal counsel to execute contractual agreements for fuel, power, raw materials and spare parts purchases.
  • Maintains awareness of current industry trends and practices by participating in various industry associations such as the Portland Cement Association (PCA) and providing technical expertise to regulatory agencies and other government groups as appropriate. Visits other cement industry plants and offices to maintain contact with their operations and employees for periodic reports to the Senior Management.
  • Maintains external company contacts on a regular basis including equipment suppliers, legal firms, trade and professional organizations, recruiters, consultants, and raw materials and fuels suppliers.




  • Bachelor's Degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering, chemistry, or geology is preferred.


Work Experience


  • A minimum of 15 years of experience at a cement plant in production and plant management positions.
  • Extensive knowledge of technical processes involved in the production and logistics of the distribution of cement.
  • Demonstrated extensive background “managing other managers” in multiple functional areas is required (i.e., manufacturing, quality, safety/risk management, maintenance, etc.), along with coaching/mentoring and performance management experience.


Required Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to production, quality control, safety, and environmental issues involved in cement manufacturing. 
  • Effective leadership and negotiation skills.
  • A team player who demonstrates a partnering attitude and capability to work with other associates throughout the organization in a pleasant and collaborative manner. 
  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Regional Domestic Travel 50-75%
