Position Overview

Under the direction of the Vice President of Talent, manages and directs the employee and labor relations program for the company. This includes negotiation of collective bargaining agreements; contract administration and interpretation; and, guidance/coordination of related management activities consistent with the labor relations strategy of the Company.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

(Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Administers and manages administration of labor contracts; provides interpretation of labor contracts to managers, employees and HR staff; oversees processes for review and resolution of employee grievances.
  • Advises managers and employees on sensitive labor and employee relations matters, including grievance and arbitration procedures, performance issues and disciplinary actions; advises and assists managers in identifying employee relations issues and determining appropriate course of action.
  • Serves as the companys negotiator in contract negotiations. Maintains current knowledge of employee and labor relations trends, legal decisions, and statutory changes; conducts research necessary to support contract negotiations and employee relations. Uses appropriate negotiation strategies to develop bargaining goals and negotiate contracts consistent with the Company’s mission, values and goals.
  • Facilitates on-going communication and working relationships with managers and acts as a resource to ensure consistency in management of Labor Contracts.
  • Represents the Company in arbitrations.
  • Provides information, advice and assistance to Human Resources department managers and staff regarding application of statutes, regulations, contracts and employee relations practices relating to their functional areas.
  • Acts as a member of the Human Resources department team and participates in setting the direction of human resources support activities for the Company. Develops and recommends to the Vice President of Talent policies and procedures concerning employee relations and personnel practices.
  • Manages the process to investigate and respond to complaints from the Bureau of Labor or other agencies.
  • Demonstrates employee advocacy and develops a reputation as a neutral and approachable HR professional serving all employees and the organization.
  • Provide current and prospective employees with information about policies, job duties/responsibilities, compensation, opportunities for promotion and employee benefits.
  • Maintains professional demeanor in dealing with critical/confidential information; restricts discussion/knowledge of activity to a “need to know” basis.
  • Oversee FMLA, Disability and Workers’ Compensation claims to ensure consistency in how the claims are handled and communicates as needed with vendor and employee
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education/Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related discipline strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in human resources required
  • 5 + years of experience managing Labor contracts and working in a Union environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Familiarity with all federal, state and local employment law
  • Proficiency of MS Excel and Word applications required.

 

Preferred

  • Experience working in a construction environment preferred.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment preferred.

 

Work Requirements

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Ability to travel to/from various work sites
  • When in the field, required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to: Safety Glasses, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, Dust masks & Hearing Protection

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an office setting to on a computer using fingers and hands to make keystrokes. The employee is regularly required to communicate.  The employee is required to remain stationary and move for periods of time.  The employee is required to use a computer for extended periods of time.  The employee is required to move around construction and mining sites safely.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust to focus.  Employees in this job may continuously use fine motor skills, repetitive motions, move left and right.  They may frequently move and reach.  This position requires an employee to frequently move 0-25lbs and occasionally move 25-50lbs.
