Position Overview
This Field/Cost Engineer is an entry position. When acting in a Field Engineer capacity, the position involves administration support and delivery support of the Large Project Manager for projects. The project manager is responsible for the overall safety of project personnel, administration & facilitation of project deliverables, critical path schedule, quality management, environmental compliance, and project financials.
When acting in a Cost Engineer capacity, the position involves preparation of Unit Cost Reports, Job Cost Projections and Change Orders. The Cost Engineer is responsible for supporting the project manager for all financial deliverables required by the owner, and all financial reporting required by management.
Key Project Manager Support Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Participate in safety meetings, trainings, inspections and audits.
- Prepare and communicate critical path schedule via Primavera P6 or MS Project software.
- Coordinate with QCM to develop and administer a quality control plan.
- Consult with an engineer firm for development of a traffic control plan, and secure required encroachment permits.
- Correspond with the owner for all project deliverables and establish a professional relationship.
- Participate in regular owner, scheduling, and third-party meetings.
- Ensure all existing and new utilities are identified.
- Prepare and maintain project correspondence, submittals, RFI and as-builts.
- Ensure environmental compliance, ie. coordinate development of a SWPPP.
- Review with superintendent and or foreman daily costs for compliance with estimated costs.
- Together with the owner prepare monthly pay estimates and assist the contract administrator with billings.
- Prepare and submit a monthly project cost projection using the projection tool.
- Analyze blueprints, specifications, proposals and other documents for efficient delivery of projects.
- Prepare detailed change proposal estimates based on changes to final plans and specifications. Utilize bidding software to prepare change orders.
- Consult with clients, vendors and subcontractors to resolve issues and formulate change orders.
- Maintain current and accurate information on progress quantities.
- Prior to job startup, review with the job superintendent the project plans, specifications and review the project startup list to ensure that each item is done, ie. dig line has been contacted.
Key Superintendent Support Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
- Act as a liaison between the PM and Superintendent, and the PM and field inspectors
- Develop ATS, rover and machine models with use of Business Center / Trimble software
- Fly and operate a drone. Process and prepare various surface analysis, and quantity verifications
- Consult with clients, vendors and subcontractors to facilitate scope, schedule, and resolve issues.
- Physically measure, assess the condition, and formalize as-builts for projects.
- Manage projects awarded which includes scheduling, resource allocation, cost projections, and billing.
- Check daily cost sheets for correctness, compliance with estimated cost, and if over budget, find out why and report to management.
- Prior to job startup, review with the job foreman the project plans, specifications and review the project startup list to insure that each item is done, ie. dig line has been contacted.
- Assist Estimating by providing feedback on job progress as opposed to as estimated.
- Assist Estimating as available by performing field measurements determining sources.
- Check that foreman’s job quantities are correct and submitted to Estimating; remember they will generate the invoice based on what you report.
- Maintain, in conjunction with the hot plant operator, adequate oil supplies and fuels to meet the project’s needs. Review Hot plant reports, crusher reports, job reports.

Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management or another related field is preferred. Two years internship experience with FAA, DOT and or FHWA is preferred; or an equivalent of education and experience will be accepted.
