Position Overview

The Pipe Crew – Heavy (Laborer & Equipment Operator) worker is responsible for performing laborer duties to assist the heavy equipment operator to lay and/or dig up pipe in the ground. Pipes include utility/conduit, water and sewer lines. May also operate equipment if trained. This job requires travel throughout the state of Montana.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Shovels earth/dirt to prepare ground trenches for pipes.  May dig up existing ground pipes with shovel as needed.
  • Guides pipes into place while equipment operator maneuvers pipes attached with chains/guide wires. 
  • Attaches trench box to chains/guide wires so it can be lowered or lifted by the equipment operator.  Attaches pipes to chains/guide wires.
  • Connects pipes using misc. tools, lubricants, glue/grout.  Builds couplings, connectors, and mechanical joints using parts and tools.  Cuts pipe with saw.
  • Sets up and moves laser level/tripod and pipe lasers. 
  • Performs job site clean-up.
  • Fences off job site areas for safety purposes.  Sets up barricades and safety cones.
  • May operate heavy equipment to include front end loader, excavator, backhoe, or other equipment as needed.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • 2-5 years previous utility experience highly preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Safety minded professional who demonstrates good performance and attendance.
  • Good math skills required.
  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to apply common sense understanding to follow written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work overtime and weekends.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, without direct supervision.           
  • Must pass pre-employment physical screening and controlled substance testing.
  • Ability to travel is required.
