Job Summary

The Sr. Benefits Administrator is responsible for the administration of health benefits, retirement programs, and leave of absences. The Senior Benefits Administrator is an essential role of the CRL organization that interacts with all levels of employees and management. Administers and maintains company benefits programs. Informs and guides employees on benefits matters regarding eligibility, coverage and provisions. Compiles and maintains benefits records and documentation. The Benefits Administrator maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information and ensures compliance with state and federal record-keeping laws. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administers health benefits for all employees, determines eligibility, manages open enrolment process, collaborates with payroll and finance to reconcile benefit premiums and payroll adjustments.
  • Maintains positive relations with benefit brokers and TPA’s
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the Company's Leaves of Absence process
  • Administers leave programs and policies in accordance with the applicable federal, California, and other state employment laws (FMLA, CFRA, PDL, ADA, ADA/FEHA, USERRA, etc.) in collaboration with the third-party administrator
  • Maintain appropriate communications with employees, managers and HRBP on leaves including responding to employee questions through email, phone calls and in-person conversations
  • Manages interactive process with employees and managers
  • Monitors and tracks leave of absences through internal payroll and timekeeping systems, including wage replacement benefits
  • Provides regular status reports to management and produces and manages reporting metrics and analytics for all leave cases
  • Continuous improvement mindset and reviews existing processes and leads initiatives to increase overall efficiency and streamlining benefits processes
  • Provides support to HR and Safety for leaves related to workers' compensation
  • Support continuous improvement of standardized LOA process administration with a focus on enhancing and streaming lining process
  • Supports HR team with various projects and initiatives as needed
  • Ensure employees are paid accurately while on leave by completing their timecards and sending coordination spreadsheets to payroll each pay period, including managing benefit deductions
  • Administers the company 401k Plan, ensures compliance with plan rules, working closing with payroll, record keeper and 3rd party administrator
  • Ensures accurate 401k contributions, employer match and employee loans are maintained in the payroll system and ensures the 401k eligibility & enrollment requirements are met
  • Manages weekly funding of employee contribution, employer match and loan payments
  • Participate in meetings with the third-party administrator and/or providers
  • Facilitates all 401k plan audits with assistance from the Corporate Controller
  • Regular and predictable attendance, safely perform tasks and adhere to all safety policies and procedures that are essential functions of the job
  • Other duties as assigned


Skills, Knowledge and Ability Requirements

To be considered for the Benefits Administrator position, the following conditions must be met:

  • A minimum of 3-5-year previous benefits administration, including health benefits, leave administration and 401(k) experience
  • Associates Degree or higher education preferred
  • Strong organizational and listening skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work with deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment to meet required deadlines
  • Utilizes strong time management and organizational skills to successfully multi-task
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and conduct themselves professionally, with excellent written and verbal communications
  • Microsoft Office applications including strong experience with MS Excel required
  • CEBS Certification or working towards similar certification preferred



  • Personal desktop computers, fax machine, copy machine, calculator, writing instruments, telephone, and various printers. 
  • Issued safety equipment



  • This position is largely sedentary; however, caution needs to be taken when listing files, boxes, opening file cabinet drawers, desk drawers.
  • To avoid injuries to hands, back and neck, proper ergonomics should be maintained while working at desk/workstation.


    Work Environment

  • Primarily works in an office environment with controlled climate.
  • Ability to perform light hand activity work at a computer/telephone station in an office environment. Position is primarily sedentary.
  • Some duties may involve being in a plant environment where noise levels can be moderate to high and be subject to the same general climate conditions of the region (heat, cold, humidity, etc.). 
  • Chemicals, dust, pollen and other typical airborne particulate matter are present within the atmosphere of the production floor and may create some odors in the plant. The Company, in an effort to provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, limits exposure to chemicals through written procedures, engineering controls and PPE.
  • While the chemical exposure and odors are under acceptable levels set by OSHA and the WCB, they nevertheless, can be smelled and are handled according to the company’s hazardous communication program.
