PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

This skilled position involves the safe operation of loading & unloading railcars, switching of tracks and coupling & uncoupling of railcars. This position requires the ability to complete some basic repairs on both railcars & locomotives. Working overtime may be required.

 

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  1. Perform a safety check on all the railcars and make sure that the area is clear and doors are locked before the train is moved.
  2. Follow directions from the engineer and foreman on loading and off loading the train.
  3. Couple & uncouple cars and hook up all hoses, and open or close all valves.
  4. When the railcar is in motion the brakeman assists the engineer in all required functional and safety activities.
  5. The brakeman communicates with all other rail personnel with 2-way radios.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Thorough operational knowledge of railroad equipment and procedures.
  2. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  3. Ability to perform all job duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  4. Ability to keep time and material records.
  5. Ability to communicate positively with co-workers and represent Tilcon appropriately.

 

 

 

 

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

 

Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and construction areas as outlined by MSHA and state agencies.  Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position:  Hardhat, safety glasses, reinforced toed shoes, hand protection, safety vest/high visibility clothing.
