The Asphalt Quality Control Roadway Technician job requires a knowledge of all component properties and their costs, proportioning, testing procedures and computations, evaluating the results for specification compliance, summarizing of data and submitting required information to the agency or owner.  The QC Roadway Technician conduct tests on Hot Mix Asphalt and component materials to determine compliance to applicable specifications. Assist in mixture adjustment and lay down operation to ensure specification compliance.  If certified, s/he may also perform quality testing/reporting on concrete and/or earthwork if required on a job.


Primary Job Duties include:

  • Aggregate Testing & HMA Production Testing: sampling, aggregate gradation and mixture volumetric property determination where applicable.
  • Roadway Construction Testing: temperature, layer thickness, compacted in place density and sampling.
  • Maintain test result database and inputting data.
  • Driving to and from job sites in a company vehicle on project sites.


Physical Requirements:

  • The QC Roadway Technician job requires the following motions: climbing, bending squatting, stretching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling, etc. 
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds regularly, but not repetitively. 
  • Uses a 150 pound truck-mounted coring drill which requires pushing, pulling, maneuvering, and precise adjustment.
  • Requires driving to and from job sites in a company vehicle and on project sites on rough terrain.
  • Exposure to road construction environment, moving equipment and traffic.  Must take measurements of roadway and ongoing construction.
  • Exposure to working around hot asphalt (>300 degrees Fahrenheit) for obtaining and testing/processing samples using appropriate personal protective equipment including hard hat, gloves, eye protection, and other protective garments.
  • Use of a core cutting saw to size asphalt samples.  Work in proximity to a rotating blade.  Exposure to industrial manufacturing environment (i.e. motors, conveyors, pulleys and heavy motorized equipment).
  • Handling a shovel and placement of asphalt materials to fill coring holes is required. 
  • May use light duty hand tools, such as wrenches and screwdrivers.
  • May be exposed to extremes of heat of cold weather and day and/or night work.

Minimum Skills and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED Equivalent required.
  • College engineering degree or technical school diploma preferred.
  • Must currently possess FDOT Roadway Level  I and II certification.
  • 1-2 years' experience in heavy highway or paving industry preferred.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
  • Overtime is required.
  • Must be reliable and arrive and start work on time.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for the area of operation.
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Must be able to read and use measuring devices.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform mathematical skills (adding, subtracting, division, multiplication, percentages and weights).
