Job Summary

 

The welder position entails fusing metal materials together using high heat equipment and welding processes such as MIG and or TIG.

.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Utilize plasma, gas or electric arc in welding metallic and composite materials together
  • Heat and dissolve metal parts to obtain molten substance used in welding or extrusion
  • Operate manual and semi-automatic welding equipment in vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions
  • Use power saws, chipping knife and hand shears in cutting, beveling, and contouring metal workpieces
  • Monitor work equipment to ensure usage is within optimum temperature to avoid overheating or expansion
  • Prepare metal surfaces by cleaning with chemical solutions and wire brushes to remove impurities such as scale, rust, grease, and moisture
  • Design patterns and models for a welding projects using specifications contained in a blueprint
  • Direct electrodes on or across metal workpieces to melt, bend or straighten them
  • Mount and secure workpieces on production equipment using cranes, hoists or banding machines
  • Analyzes blueprints, plans, and drawings to determine measurements, plan layout, and sequence of welding assignments.

 

 

Skills, Knowledge and Ability Requirements

To be considered for a position, the following conditions must be met:

 

  • Requires a high school diploma and several years of training as a welding apprentice.
  • Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (TIG, MMA etc.)
  • Ability to carry out complex math calculations to determine the dimensions and configuration of welding projects
  • Ability to perform welding operations under extreme conditions such as inclement weather and or limited workspaces
  • Ability to operate and utilize a range of power and hand tools in carrying out welding activities
  • May be required to take an assessment test.
  • Able to read blueprints and drawings to identify welding measurements and positions.
  • The major qualities you need to be effective on this job include math skills, physical stamina, and manual dexterity.

  • Manual or semi-automatic welding equipment
  • Plasma cutter
  • Chipping knives, power saws, grinders, clamps

Safety

  • Hazards - Exposure to Chemicals/Fumes, Pinch Points, Exposure to Excessive Noise, Strain/Sprain, Laceration/Puncture, Particulate Exposure, Contusion, Temperature Extremes, Slipping, Burns, Shock, Loss of Limbs
  • Controls - Personal Protective Equipment, Safety Training, Written Procedures
  • Safety Equipment –ensure compliance with safety protocols by wearing protective gloves, masks, and steel toed boots. Cut resistant sleeves, other equipment as dictated by the specific department.
  • Do not point the high-pressure air hose toward any person.  Always use the chip collector when blowing chips from metal.

 

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, you are es frequently exposed to odor, noise, dust, heat, cold, airborne particles. The temperature in the work environment is not regulated.
  • The plant facility is subject to the same general climate conditions of the region (heat, cold, humidity, etc.). 
  • Chemicals, dust, pollen and other typical airborne particulate matter are present within the atmosphere of the production floor and may create some odors in the plant. The Company, in an effort to provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, limits exposure to chemicals through written procedures, engineering controls and PPE.
  • While some chemical may pose health risks if not properly used, employees are trained on the proper safety equipment and procedures for handling chemicals.
  • While the chemical exposure and odors are under acceptable levels set by OSHA and the WCB, they nevertheless, can be smelled and are handled according to the company’s hazardous communication program.
  • Work is performed inside a production environment.
