Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for you! SIGCO, a CRH Company, is the leading architectural glass and architectural metal fabricator/distributor in New England; and is accepting applications for a skilled Plant Engineer to join our team. This position entails management of equipment repairs and maintenance, reviewing equipment drawings and plans, envisioning and creating operational flow of machinery, and making sure processes meet compliance regulations to support two facilities in Westbrook, ME, located 3.5 miles apart, with a current total headcount of ~250 employees. This job is well suited to a great problem-solver who has both electrical and mechanical skills and enjoys working with diverse trades and groups to get the work done in a fast-paced environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Develop Operational Plans

  • Develop operational plans for projects at the facilities; including construction, renovation, machine installation and maintenance. Includes preparation of capital expenditure requests, applications for expense, designing, specifying, purchasing and tracking all spending related to the project


Review Project Plans

  • Review project plans to ensure that timelines and blueprints are accurate and that cost estimates tie in with the budget. Interpret developments along the way and provide technical advice and guidance for any necessary changes


Maintain Equipment

  • Work directly with maintenance staff and outside contractors to design, purchase, install, and maintain equipment in fast paced production environment
  • Monitor and maintain plant equipment and machinery to ensure that it’s running as it should be
  • Utilize preventative and predictive maintenance programs and processes to properly track and service equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations
  • Ability to understand power, air, and pneumatic requirements for equipment 
  • Knowledge of 480/277 V and 220/110 volt systems is necessary
  • Actively identify new areas for learning and take advantage of learning opportunities
  • Keeps abreast of current product developments and trends in areas of expertise


Train Plant Personnel

  • Train and assist plant personnel in operating and maintaining equipment in a safe manner. Help to develop best practices for production processes
  • Develop maintenance and operator best practice training documentation and conducting equipment qualification


Ensure Regulation Compliance

  • Ensure the facility is compliant with the relevant regulations and that regular check-ups are carried out to verify that machinery and processes are safe


Liaison with Internal Customers and External Vendors

  • HVAC contracts, plowing and lawn maintenance, security and fire system controls, and environmental compliance agreements
  • Coordinates input from internal customers to better understand customer needs and/or perceptions

Regular and predictable attendance and adherence to all safety policies and procedures are essential functions of the job.


Skills, Knowledge, and Ability Requirements

To be considered for the Plant Engineer position, the ideal candidate will have:

  • BS in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT experience
  • Microsoft Windows and DOS experience
  • Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, and MS Project.   
  • Minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong technical fundamentals with process engineering skills
  • Ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions
  • Excellent analytical skills of complex projects or problems

  • Hazards - Exposure to Chemicals/Fumes, Pinch Points, Exposure to Excessive Noise, Strain/Sprain, Laceration/Puncture, Particulate Exposure, Contusion, Temperature Extremes, Slipping, Burns, Shock, Loss of Limbs
  • Controls - Personal Protective Equipment, Safety Training, Written Procedures
  • Safety Equipment – Hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe shoes/boots, cut resistant gloves, cut resistant outerwear, other equipment as dictated by the specific department.

Work Environment

  • Noise levels in the work environment can be moderate to high.
  • The plant facility is subject to the same general climate conditions of the region (heat, cold, humidity, etc.). 
  • Chemicals, dust, pollen and other typical airborne particulate matter are present within the atmosphere of the production floor and may create some odors in the plant. The Company, in an effort to provide its employees with a safe and healthy working environment, limits exposure to chemicals through written procedures, engineering controls and PPE.
  • While some chemical may pose health risks if not properly used, employees are trained on the proper safety equipment and procedures for handling chemicals.
  • While the chemical exposure and odors are under acceptable levels set by OSHA and the WCB, they nevertheless, can be smelled and are handled according to the company’s hazardous communication program.
