Position Overview

Our Internship Program is open to undergraduate students interested in gaining hands-on practical experience in the construction field. Qualified applicants will assist will work within the construction and manufacturing areas of Asphalt, Aggregates and Concrete. Our internship is structured to provide a full range understanding of our numerous companies. Interns will learn the product, various positions, and production processes. With this internship a student will find themselves learning within several different departments such as Quality Control, Sales, Maintenance, and Operations.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

Interns within our organization will spend the bulk of their time focusing on construction activities that include:

  • Project management (public and private jobs).
    • Work with estimators on how to bid and follow through on the process.
    • Work with project managers and construction crew foreman.
  • Asphalt plant operations
    • Spend time working with Plant Operators running asphalt plants.
    • Work with yard crew and loader operator.
    • Learn how to run scales.
    • Assist with general maintenance of the plant.
  • Construction crews
    • Working with a construction crew and/or prep crew.
    • Spend time with foreman learning how to prepare for the job and set up job.
    • Learn about construction equipment – various uses and skills required.
  • Equipment and shops
  • Business management
    • Work with Operations Manager/accounting on monthly projections.
    • Understand job cost and workload.
    • Understand basics with P&L and financial statements.
  • Aggregate manufacturing and sales
    • Spend time working in an aggregate location. Learn how to run scales.
    • Learn about various materials available in quarries and pits.
    • Understand basic operations and logistics.
    • Learn about customer base (internal and external).
  • Concrete plant operations
    • Working with a plant foremen on the daily activity for a concrete plant.
    • Spend time with dispatch learning how to prepare for the day and dispatch to job sites.
    • Learn about equipment required to run a concrete plant – various uses and skills required.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum education of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college degree program and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Sophomore through Senior pursuing a technical/vocational certificate, associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in Concrete Industry Management (Preferred), Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or another related field.

 

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Report to the office dressed appropriately according to company policy ready to work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Must be willing to work off hours, nights, weekends and occasionally holidays when necessary.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as delivery tickets, safety rules and procedure manuals as well as carry out written or verbal instructions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft suite of tools including Excel, Word and Outlook preferred.  Must be able to use the internet effectively.
  • Demonstrate basic mathematical skills as well as the ability to interpret and compute basic formulas.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, and other conditions that may affect daily responsibilities. Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
  • Willingness to work independently within in a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Regularly required to site and use hands and fingers to manipulate/handle objects.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, talk, hear and lift and/or move up to 15 lbs.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch, lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person.
  • Able to utilize office equipment including a computer for word processing, email communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.

 

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud but is typically moderate.
